This goes back to what was previously mentioned by others. If you have enough tank space RDs will do a lot better with tankmates. This isn't generally the case with small tanks. My advice wasn't based on speculation. I have owned both species and The RDs were very aggressive towards any and everything. JDs aren't wired and built like RDs. The thought of a Jag and a RD in the same tank is a little different. Both fish attain good size and power with the bite force to inflict damage. I think this contest would be 50/50. I've had both Jags and RDs and they both didn't back down to anything.

You could be right on saying that generally isn't the case with small tanks...But most certainly and foremost would be that a RD shouldn't be in a small tank to begin with-Let alone with other aggressive fish.....Sounds like disaster in the makeing if one asked me....

I can not speak so much on Jag and RD combo-I have owned one Jag.....But let me tell you-it ran every tank I put him in....But yes now I do have more of a docile tank setup......I have moved out of the aggressive stage of fish keeping....

I have also owned some huge JD's-above the 11 inch mark that would and could hold their own.....The proof was in all the pics I use to show years ago here.....Sad I dont have them now a days due to lack of comp knowledge.....

One jas has to monitor the fish and watch how they interact....every species is different.....Just to come out and say that the combo will not work or one will beat the hell out of the other is speculation in my eyes...Many have had these combo's work

It looks like there are more personal experiences (evidence) with RD's than conjecture, so I think its fair to say its not speculation. Youre 1 of 2 that have had "success" in this thread (quoted because we dont know the tank size, rd size, other fish size, overstocked or not etc). Not a very likely outcome based on the evidence presented.

Yeah I spoke before I thought I guess...I certainly didn't mean everyone...Maybe I used the wrong choice of words-That could be likely..

If so I do apologize.

I will see if I can dig up some old pics and post them.......I have some vids too as long as I didn't loose them when my comp crashed.
But everything I am saying has been posted before and showed with pics and such in the past here....

Not at all no I don't want them to fight (I know you are maybe suspicious of the thread and may not believe me) but seriously, I am very curious about the heirarchy of each specie, how they would be if they had to capture territory from an enemy etc. I think that aspect of fish keeping, as long as it is not abused is quite an interesting topic. I saw a cool video about Tanganyikan cichlids fighting and it was very interesting.

Don't think I am crazy, I just find it interesting !

I keep a 400g tank with 13" RD and an 8" JD a Jag , Dovii female and Red Terror in they are all smaller than RD and tank is very peaceful at the moment . BUT I am waiting to see how he reacts when they get to his size as the threat may make him snap at which point I can remove whatever I need to seperate tanks tanks

Hi everyone,

First of all I want to say that I don't condone Cichlid fighting at all, I don't encourage it. I am however very interested in it. Since we all put our cichlids in a much smaller environment to what they are used to in the wild, it is part and parcel of the mixed Cichlid aquarium, it creates personality among specific individual Cichlids and can determine the atmospgere of our aquariums.

I keep Jack Dempseys (3 in total) one large dominant male (8 inch) and a smaller female (6 inch) and small male (4 inch).

I want to create a debate regarding two of my favourite species.

Lets say it was a 100g and you had a large dominant male Red Devil at say 8 inch and a large dominant Jack Dempsey at around 8 inch. Who would win in a fight over territory if they wished to do so?

To further the debate, could anyone provide evidence of the two species co-existing peacefully together? I have a 100 Gallon with a mature 8 inch male and would like to add some other large CA cichlids in the near future.

Thanks for your input and please don't see this as a silly thread that promotes animal cruelty. I don't think it is a crime to assess Cichlid fighting as long as it is done sensibly.

i have had a 6 inch aggressive male red devil that always dominated my 6 inch dempsey till one day he got tired of it and beat the **** out of the devil, also beat the **** out of my jag, id say dempsey, once they start to fight, tehy dont give up, theyr like teh energizer bunny jsut keep on going and going
