Red saum

If they truly have a deeper, more intense orange rim, I wouldn't call it a sales gimmick. If you can't really tell the difference between these and all other Goldsaums, then yes, that is obviously a sales gimmick. It is kinda hard to tell from the pics. Either way, nice pair ya got there!

if it's the same exact species, than yes it is a sales gimik.

Complelty different species, labed under

Sp. "Red Saum"

would be one thing, but don't make it something it isn't.

for instance a niceraguan dovii with a very pronounced Blue Sheen of the fin's being sold as "Sp. Blue Dovii".

This would and does confuse people terribley, as previously stated and shown.

red saums look different to me and well worth it ive seen real red saums alot they to me are very red

from the looks of it the only thing that looks really interesting from the Aequidens family are the true rivulatus and the silver saum on jeff's website... the gold, red, orange or whatever colored saums are all most likely the same thing. same species of fish, just varying intensities of fin coloration.
my humble opinion is that whilst you have very attractive fish there, i honestly couldn't tell you that they are any different from the other green terrors, 'saum' variants out there.

to give a rather similar analogy - you wouldn't really consider a tiger oscar, lemon oscar, red oscar or what not different species... they are pretty much the same with different colors. unfortunately there is probably a whole bunch of mixing going on and saums (whatever the heck that really is or means) are sadly being lumped into one big melting pot. the red, orange, gold labels to me is just marketing for what is largely being considered 'green terror' in the hobby.

While I personally do believe silver, gold, and red saums will most likely end up being differant color/location morphs of the same fish, until they are scientificly described, it is best to treat each color for as it's own species. Prevents hybids in the unlikely case that scientists do indeed make each one it's own species (like the 4 types of convicts for instance).

i have true green terrors to and hey it may be just a better looking gold saum or whatever and i am ok with that i talk to jeff about it and he said u have to see it side by side with a gold saum and u will tell the difference , but i aslo have to wait tell it grows up some

As XR said, it is a sales gimmick. From one breeding I can separate the offspring as they grow into different groups.Gold Saums(Those with a more orange trim or lacking in red colour),Red Saum (those with a deeper orange-red trim and better colours)Side by side you will see a big difference in appearance as they grow.I can now sell these as different fish. How wrong is this because this is what is happening. It has happened in the past with them being referred to as Royal GT/Saums.Have a look through the GT/Saum sticky and you will see plenty of what people are referring to as Red Saums.Call them better specimens and appreciate them for what they are, even be willing to pay more for this quality but adding another name to the already confusing situation of GTs(true/gold/silver) is just silly IMO.

You will see a difference.I can show you a specimen with Red Trim,One with Orange/white trim .You can see all this from one batch of offspring. You can even see this in the growing stages of just one fish.:)
