Rena Filters

Also, the impeller may be stuck. Used to happen to me all the time with my Aquaclear filters. Had to slide the uptake tube over and shove a pen in there to get it moving. Pull the top off, plug it in and move the impeller with a pen. See if it can be jump started. Also, with sand in your tank there may be some grit in there keeping it from moving. Pull the impeller out, rinse it clean as well as the impeller housing.

I've been using an XP3 for my 75 gallon tank and it runs pretty well. I haven't had any problems with it and it's fairly simple to use.

Though that's just me, I guess it depends on what you have.

i originally bought an xp4, thought it was oversized and badly designed, and returned it for the xp3 which has run perfectly for a year now. it's only needed cleaning 3 times and moves enough water to suit me.

If I remember right SKLZ, that first day we were setting it up, you closed the top of the filter and inserted the hoses and pushed the lever down to clamp the hoses in and it didn't give and you pushed harder and something popped or cracked. Then we couldn't get any pressure. That may in fact have been operator error.

I have an X3 and an X2 and am ecstatic. I also have a Fluval 304 and I HATE that thing. Getting it sealed and primed after a cleaning is a HUGE PITA. I will be replacing it soon with an X2.

You know, you bought the X4 in anticipation to buy a bigger tank. Maybe you should scale back to the X3. I have an X3 on my 110 and it is doing just fine. If I recall you are looking for a similar tank as you only have 5 feet of space as well. Take the X4 back, get the X3 and save yourself some coin...

That is true, but if remember we were having the water flow problem for like 20 minutes before I tried to force the top on.

Even if that was the issue with the first, it doesn't explain the second one dying.

I've had a total of 4 XP3s and haven't had problems with them. Sold two (about 3-4 years old) of them with my 135gal and still have two (about 1.5 years old) on my 180gal. I got a 240gal and was thinking of going with two XP4s but read a few people had problems with them and didn't like the specs in comparison to an XP3. I went with a FX5on my 240gal instead and going to get either a second FX5 or a XP3.

do you use bags for your carbon in the filter? you may have some carbon somewhere it shouldn't

Even if that was the case, it doesn't explain his pump not working. The pump should still work, that would just reduce the flow rate.

I also am having the issue with my hoses turning all dirty. I was getting great pressure however, but the hoses look like have mold all through them.

just leave them.

what you are seeing are nitrifying bacterial colonies attached to the inside of the hose.

they are the good guys! :)

I am using 2 XP3's and an XP4 on my 320 gallon tank that is 6 feet high (5 feet high for the filters). I have had them for about 2 months with no problems so far but I have noticed the mold/dirt in the clear tubing. I don't think it will be a problem, though.

I had a Fluval 404 that was noisy, really hard to prime, short tubing and not much flow. A real piece of junk. As a result I have been afraid to buy a FX5, though others seem to like them. I will have my 60 gallon sump back in place soon, so I think I'll stick with the Rena filters for now.

I have five xp3s running currently, love them. My only complaint is the cost increase of these filters, last year at this time you could get them for 75 bucks :screwy:
