the fish were starved for 4 Days.
Actually, I think they were starved for 6 days, since I normally only fed that tank on M-W-F. I fed them on Monday and skipped the next two scheduled feedings.

Jed,

Im with Tim on this one, I would of used the large bags and oxy along with some anti ammo additive and drove the 12 hrs nonstop.

Jon

Im sorry to see you go through all of that trouble and have a few fish die. In the end the tanks looks great,,,, congrats

I was thinking abouyt the bagging with pure O2 that is why I brought bags and an O2 tank but if I did that, I wouldn't be able to close my trunk :(

I just went with the way Neal did it as it was successful on his first try and the fish he hauled was on an airpump for about 22hrs. total from WA to SoCal.

I still question the stability of the spring water that was used during the W/Cs..

I like the idea of using established filters.. not a bad idea... 3 mini canisters would of been cool.

Also the pure O2 would have raised the pH to it's maximum, causing the toxicity of Ammonia to rise. Also the warmer the water, the more toxic the ammonia..

In regular shipping methods, Co2 builds up at the same time as Ammonia builds up.. The Co2 build-up causes the pH to go down, which lessens the toxicity of the ammonia as it rises.. Having super oxygenated water while having a build up in Ammonia is more lethal than having un-oxygenated water while having an ammonia buildup.

.

miles thats is completely obsured!

The o2 gas can only dissolve so much into the water, and even still it wont go to a pH of 14! it wont even reach 8 if they used spring water!

and temperature has no affect on ammonias toxicity, its does however affect the waters oxygen holding capacity.

The c02 levels might go up but the oxygen gas will disolve into the water and counter the c02 from driving the pH down.

The fish would of been fine in large bins using contractor bags and bottled oxy with some ammo lock added,,,, seal em up and drive... I have moved much larger fish with this method and had minimal losses. 4 foot id sharks etc You name it I moved it.

its unfortunate sometimes we think too much and kill with love.

jed next time you should try Miles method,, no oxygen in a sealed bag lol

Joke

Miles you are correctin theory, it is true that when u receive fish that are bagged in super high ammo low oxygenated water the ph rises as u open the bag and a dangerous spikes can occur. But to suggest that the fish would of been better off with no low oxygen is silly.

I know of a person who had some rays lost in transit for 2 days, when he received them instead of opening the bags he used a huge hypodermic needle to take out the old ammo loaded water and introduce low ph clean water,,, afterwards he safely opened the bag and the rays survived.

Read up, Bro.

Also do a google search on 'AmQuel Squirt and Dump' and it will explain why and how AmQuel ammonia detoxifier was invented.
