Sad

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not in my side of the world. More are opening as the days pass by. It's just sad that some of the fish I know of cannot be found here like the jaguar cichlid, the convict and any of the African cichlids (with the exception of the butti).

Naos those kind of things change over time, people in China will realise there is a demand for them and start breeding them to sell to retailers.

the sad truth is stores come and go all the time, someone will come along to take the place even if its a chain like big al's

^ i wish i could say that about stores here... Since that used to be the case, 1 LFS closes, another takes its place...

Now its one closes down and a restaurant or some other type of pet store such as a dog store will pop up instead which is a huge shame, since fish street is losing the thing its best known for, fish!

I live in southeast missouri, there has been 3 lfs shut down over the past 6 years. I have to travel 130 miles to St. Louis for my fish. The last time I was in St. Louis my favorite lfs closed down. It's very dissapointing.

The only real lfs closed down last year here. The store was filled with clean tanks and I never saw a dead fish. They also had an amazing stock that you wouldn't ever find at petco or the other crappy pet stores. not enough people care I guess, they even had reasonable prices.

I can't really relate to that there is at least 7 or 8 LFS with good supply in my city

It is a shame to see local fish stores managed by people who actually know what they are doing shut down. The only lfs around me closed as soon as I moved here 6 years ago. I've only been in it once right before it closed, but it was not very well cared for.
Now I have to either buy fish, supplies, and aquarium plants online, or drive 60-70 miles to the nearest petsmart which usually does not have what I want in stock.

I have seen lots of great lfs come and go here as well only one descent one left with limited selection and kind of pricey though. Its got to be hard to compete with online shopping were everything can be purchased for less. It really sucks either way to see a good lfs close down

Hong Kong real estate/rent prices definitely presents a challenge to someone trying to keep a LFS profitable there. My area of China is on the other end of the spectrum, rent is cheap, but because there are no large cities close by there are no places to go buy fish unless it is for dinner.

My home back in the states has a similar story. When I was more active in the hobby and had my saltwater tank (1990s) there were some decent LFS around that served me well enough, but slowly over the years they all shut down. Now that I am poised to spend more time there and looking forward to revitalizing my tank(s), the only local options are the big chains (petco, petsmart).

Not very excited about either needing to ship my fish from online distributors (without knowing who the good ones are), or trying to get petco to do custom orders for me. What strategies have others developed for sourcing uncommon species in areas without a good LFS?
