Sad

For me, increasingly I look at mail order vendors that are in my area and do it that way.

The guy said it took him 20k a month sales to merely break even. I don't think that entire pie of fish sales offer too many slices 20k in my area.

this is what happen when too many people use online shops :) LFS lose money because they have more mark up which is required to keep everything running, Many online stores dont have to pay for power and water etc as they just keep products and not fish with a few exceptions, Rent wise its cheaper as a warehouse can be anywhere its not required to be in a good location as a shop is. Hence the mark up.

A few shops down below have shut down too because of the above but mainly the smaller ones only supplying one type of fish or the basics. Its sad to see but so many people refuse to pay a little more to keep a LFS there.

Rt now in my place such a situation hasn't come up. But a trend of well kept, neat & costly lfs have started . Many small dirty ones are shut and I am not really saddened about it.
But I do see this happening in the near future Though.

There are only a couple of LFS left in the DC / Baltimore area and only a couple that are decent enough.

It's a business model that just doesn't work in 95 out of 100 situations.

Matt

What stores do you go too in the bmore/dc area

It seems like you are paying a little more (in some cases) at lfs. But you're really not. Rising shipping costs have eclipsed most lfs prices. So online buying plus shipping, will cost more than purchase at lfs.

only if you could get fish from the lfs as they don't order fish for you unless it's $200 minimum and with a fee charged. for equipments, it's hard for a consumer to swallow a 50% or more price markup at the lfs though, eg. fx5 at $360-$4xx while ~$200 online. I just purchased a 4kg seachem safe power bucket from amazon, the lfs here don't carry that stuff. I feel for the lfs owners, but can't help the situation.

I don't want to quibble here but fx5 for $200. What planet do you live on? My lfs will order anything I want. Fish, plants, fish food and equipment. No added fees. The prices are a little higher until you consider what the cost would be with shipping. And you deal face to face.
