id rather just get new sand before i make a mistakeDeaths Sting;3221778; said:raise ur intakes!!!
you could also buy or make a prefilter, FYI hydro sponges make great prefilters. u will have to clean it once a week but u wont have to do as much filter maintenance in return.

Deaths Sting;3221911; said:you can do that too...i was just suggesting ways to make what u got work, rather then going out and spending more money.
ive heard good things about Tahitian moon sand it comes in black, its made by Caribsea.
to be honest though i think ur being a bit paranoid when it comes to the sand, IMO.
sand isn't out to destroy ur filters, just make sure the intakes are high and like i said u can use a prefilter. lots of people including myself use sand with canister filters and HOBs. you don't even need the prefilter if ur intakes are high.
i love 3M color quarts but i know its hard for some people to get, so they use play sand and pool filter sand which also very good!

I guess that would work i dont know how deep the tank its its a standard 125.. id just have to cut my intake down some to make that work... next question is how long does it normally take for this type of sand to settle (play sand)....Deaths Sting;3222028; said:how deep is ur tank?
how big are the rays?
my ray is 7'' in diameter and i have 24'' deep tank. i use 3m color quartz so when she does sift though it, it only goes up 2'' and comes down in less then a second. my intake for my eheim is 10'' from the sand and my FX5 intake is about 6-7'' from the sand. if u have 24'' deep tank and ur intakes a very high ur ray will have trouble getting the sand into it..IMO/IME.
if u use a shallow bed of sand 1'' or less then there will be even less chance of the ray stirring up the sand high enough to reach the intakes.

Deaths Sting;3222057; said:well if u don't know how deep it is.. grab a tape measure and find out. probably 18-24'' to be safe i would make the intakes about 8-10'' away from the bottom of the tank if not the sand its self.
like i said above:
u should take some pictures of this bastard sand u speak of.. maybe its density is similar to that of 3m s grade. then i could estimate how long it will take to settle... i have never used play sand before so i can't give 100% answer...
