Not long, you don't want to lose your beneficial bacteria in the filter.

I second 3M colorquartz. You will not heavy any issues with sand sifting and floating around. I have a 9" pleco and a 5" pleco with 3M colorquartz sand. They are always flapping their tails, but the sand settles quickly and never reaches the intakes. My intakes are about 3" away from the sand, yet they never collect sand. Also, with the RENA canisters, the sand makes its way through the filter media before the impeller, so it would not be an issue.

test it out but raise ur intakes and lower the water level a lot before u throw the sand in there.

somethings came up didnt get to it last night....but i will definetly try it today before i go see transformers!
