Seachem has a new water conditioner that's "better" than Prime

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Got a response from seachem this morning. Here are my questions with the response:

1. Is it 100% safe for freshwater tanks, including planted tanks?
Yes; Alpha is safe for all freshwater environments, including planted aquariums.

2. Is it chemically any different than Prime, or is it simply a more concentrated version of the same product?
It is a different formulation than Prime and is 50% stronger.

3. What would you say are the benefits to fish of alpha over prime, aside from the concentration levels?
The benefits are the exact same, you simply use less product for the same result.

4. Does it still have that signature sulfur stink that prime has?
The sulfur smell is still present, but no where near as stinky as Prime!

5. Are there any other things I should know about the product that I might have missed?
That about covers it.

6. Are there any other aquavitro line products either out now or upcoming that might be of use in my freshwater tanks?
As a matter of fact, we are currently working on an Aquavitro planted line of products. *We are testing them here at Seachem as of right now and are planning on releasing them in the next 6 months. *Keep you eyes peeled!

The whole aquavitro line is advertised towards reefing, so I can't see how Alpha would not work, reefer are crazy about thier tanks and I'm sure have tested this well along with seachem who produces great products.

A lot of reefers use RO/DI water though so not sure how much it does get used, i'm sure the rest of the aquavitro line is popular though.

Agreed, reefers put a lot of MFKers to shame with their setups! I'm always creeping on SW message boards looking to learn something I can use in my FW tanks. :D

Good info from SeaChem, they always come across as a good company trying to make a good product, and of coarse by doing so making lots of money.

Yeah i think there are quite a few of us getting ideas from SW fourums and applying them to FW setups.

I have to say that for me, there is no better company in the hobby.

I pretty much use only Seachem products for my water treatment (prime, stability when needed, flourish, flourish excel, and purigen in some of my tanks). I feed NLS because I think it's another great company with good products, but seachem is really on top of it with customer service (luckily we have RD for NLS questions :D).
There are some other companies that make good products but their customer service is lacking IMO (cough eheim cough).

Once again you're too modest in your findings, ACWO. You never seem to get enough credit where credit is due. I appreciate all you have done to find more info about Alpha. It will make my transitioning from AZ to WI easier in addition to when I get ready to set up my 110g. I don't know where the lfs's are around in Phillip, WI, but I'm sure friends and neighbor's will be able to help out there, until I get use to the area more. The only lfs I'm aware of is about 1 hrs. drive east to Rhindlander, WI where Dr.s Foster & Smith have their retail store located. But I will definitely keep an eye out for alpha and/or prime in the mean time, to ship back with me.

Thanks again for your efforts in researching this stuff. TTYL.

Thanks, but I`ll pass.:D

Pretty interesting stuff.
I would have look at this stuff for quite awhile before changing from Prime.
Since all the biological activity is happening in my tank, I have no bio media in any filters, I would need some real convincing before I made any changes.
Still, interesting.

Your tanks setups always interest me. Gotta respect someone that goes against the grain. :)
