Seachem has a new water conditioner that's "better" than Prime

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In addition to what aclockworkorange's question to seachem, I too, have sent an inquiry of 3 questions to them as well. I will post the results when I receive my answers.

5mLs of Prime treats:
-50 gallons of water
-1 mg/L ammonia
-4 mg/L chloramine
-5 mg/L chlorine

5mLs of Alpha treats:
-75 gallons of water
-4 mg/L ammonia
-6 mg/L chloramine
-16.5 mg/L chlorine

Thus, it looks like they are basing the "50% more active than Prime" on the lowest increase out of those listed, which is chloramine: 6mg/L with Alpha is 50% more than 4mg/L with Prime.

subscribing to this thread!
if it really treats 16.5 mg/L of chlorine, I am very happy since I will not have to use a lot of this stuff :)

My water has 1.8mg/L of chlorine!

These are the numbers posted on the site but my bottle of prime says:
5mL
-50 gallons
-0.8 mg/l ammonia
-1.2 mg/l Chloramine
-3.3 mg/l Chlorine

Do i have an old bottle? I just bought it online, i can't find a manufacture date or anything. So has prime been upgraded, and also a new product that is upgraded from that?

I checked this morning's e-mail and no response from seachem. But there is still hope. The day is not over and there may be a response later today.
Patience, patience, patience.

According to the CEO/President of Seachem, Dr. Greg Morin, there were some mistakes made on older labels that have now been corrected. Nothing has changed in the formula since day 1, so go with the current numbers listed on their website, not what is found on the label.

I have read that Pond Prime is actually more concentrated than regular Prime.

That is incorrect, they are the exact same formula at the exact same strength. Less Pond Prime can be used due to it being designed for an open system, such as a pond. This does not work the same way when using Pond Prime in an aquarium.

I completely agree. Once you go stability, you never go back. Dr. Leo Morin (owner of SeaChem) knows his stuff, and seems like a really down to Earth guy.

Dr. Leo passed away a number of years ago, his son Dr. Greg Morin is the current CEO/President.

BTW - if this is about cost savings, which it appears that it is, Seachem makes a far more economical water conditioner than Prime, or Alpha, it's called Seachem Safe. I posted a thread on this subject last year.

Here's the info from Seachem.

With my local tap water (2 mg/l chloramine) a 4kg container will treat 400,000 gallons of tap water. I paid $75 + shipping when I bought my last container.

I mentioned the thread you posted about prime vs safe at some pony I believe. Good stuff.

Okay so color me confused, what's the big stink over Alpha? :)

Seachem Safe is by far the most cost effective water conditioner that Seachem makes. The only reason that few people know about it is very few LFS carry it.
