Y'all are both bats%&* crazy if you're willing to pay 8 bux for a media bag! I expect more from serious MFK'ers like you! Petsmart sells several sizes of the same bag, but made by HBH, and the biggest is like 99cents. I thought Petco was nuts for trying to charge $3 for one. Walmart sells mesh lingerie washing bags for dirt cheap as well. If you want to spend 0 dollars, the biomax bag that came with your AC filters is about 4 times as big as it needs to be & you can easily cut off half and just put a knot in the bottom. 8 dollars....sheesh...:grinno:
Purigen bags are 130 micron as purigen is too fine to go in most bags. Your right though. But im lazy and its easier to charge it safely in the bag. Plus they are durable as hell.

Correction Brother...lol
180 micron, synthetic, mesh that will hold up to the 50% bleach solution that you recharge this media with... I'm sure the nylon stocking I have it in now will disolve in a 50% BLEACH solution.
I'll have to get "The Bag" ordered before I need to recharge the Purigen

I got it in a Nylon stocking doubled and some of the finer grains were still able to get out during rinsing...Hopefully it will stay put in the canister

We use it in the canister filters we have and like it a lot. I am thinking of using that 100ml bag in the "waste trap" insert of the supercartridges (they are non-replaceable bio ball material rigid cartridges for HOB's -- they're good stuff) and see how that does on our smaller tanks that don't have canisters... I'm thinking that will actually work pretty good. It's the best and most cost effective chemical filtration I know about!

I have use it in the past, but I stopped. It really lowers nitrates level by removing organic wastes from the water. I stoped because I had the impression to loose the control of what is going on in my tanks; what is the real nitrates production in those tank system, do the BB are still able to take in charge the real amount of organics ? It gave me the impression of an artificial equilibrium.

The job of any chemical filter is to remove organic wastes from the water. If they do their job correctly, then there IS less load on the Biological filter, and therefore there would be less NitrAte production due to the Nitrogen cycle producing less.
Recharging this chemical media will clean it of the trapped organics and make it ready for re-use...Carbon, Amochips, etc. do the same thing essentially.
There are things that are claimed by the SeaChem people that make this more desireable...IMO

I just ordered some for the hell of it. I was ordering from Dr F & S anyway. I got 250ml size and some bags to split it up into. I have a drip on my big tanks now so it's really not needed but I figure it can't hurt.

Bleach will eat holes in those the cheap bags and the mesh allows purigen to leave the bag and into your tank
