SeaChem Purigen ~ Ultimate Filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have just recently recharged my Purigen and yes some of the granules have turned pink, I then soaked it in Prime and Water for about 12 hours but now it's just in a bucket of water as I am concerned about putting it back in the FX5 after using bleach to recharge it, I don't want to kill my fish. Is there anyway of testing the Purigen to make sure its safe before using it again in my tank?

It should be good to go. I soak mines in Safe for a day, rinse in fresh water then put in back in my canister with no troubles. I read at Seachem that tannins will stain Purigen however my wood stopped leaching tannins years ago. What is funny is that when soaking it bleach it is white but as soon as I move/swirl the water the Purigen turns pink.

Mine does the same thing on occasions bt never caused an issue.

Got one of the 100mL packs in one of the AquaClear 50s on my sons tank. Really helped clear up the tannins pretty quick, and the water stays nice and clear. Parameters are good, and I've recharged it once. The tannins turned it almost black, and after recharging it per the directions, it was back to light brown, not quite as light as when it was new, but close. Put it back in, no problems.
One AquaClear 50 is running sponger, purigen, and sachem matrix, the other is just running sponge and matrix, it did have charcoal, but took it out when medicating for ick....
I like it so far!

I use the bag for the media. Why cheap out and use something that will leak or degrade after being soaked in bleach repeatedly? You guys are ridiculous and crack me up! Yes I'm a mfker and I'm not afraid to pay a measly 8 bucks on a media bag. Over the years I've got thousands in tanks, filters, sumps, media, lights and several thousand more in fish. For them, 8 bucks isn't even a question. I worry about getting money so I don't have to worry about how to spend it.

To the purigen. I notice it won't turn completely white unless I use a 75/25 bleach/water mixture. With 50/50 no matter how long I soak it, and periodically mix it never turns white. Always pink. Anyone else have this issue?

After recharging I soak in safe overnight, them rinse and place back in filter/sump with more safe in the tank just in case if any left over chlorine. Never had an issue with residuals. I bought a pack of 500 latex gloves online for dirt cheap and wear those while handling the bleach.

I haven't buy any of this product yet but sounds like a great product. Everyone says they use 25/75, 50/50, or 75/25 bleach/water. What's the formula?

Bleach is cheap. Bleach is my friend. I use straight, undiluted bleach. It's white that way.
