Who said it started in Japan?I dont know where it started but I do know that cartilage comes from other sources.

sure, it comes from many animals, like humans (ears, nose ect..), but on a large scale.. i think shark is where your going to find it.

I suppose you guys eat whale too? Use herbal meds made from wild tigers?

;)

I THINK i have tried whale before (in raw form) ....can not be sure because the description was in japanes (but my understanding) ... It is quite expensive 50 bucks for two pieces.

Herbal med from tiger parts - no.

You can go on and on with your flimsy defense of the practice, you must really enjoy the stuff but the bottom line here is that the animals are being decimated with no regard to population levels. There is a supermarket in my area that has piles of beheaded sharks with all the fins ripped off,I dont know which species these were, they could have been captured locally and these types of markets are all up and down the coast and on the west and they all more than likely carry the sharks in this condition. So that whole thing about catching the fish and using most of the body does not float, the fish does not reproduce at a rate to keep up with the ammount that is being wiped out, farm raising sharks is not an option, soo they will be fished and hunted untill there are no more sharks left all for the sake of a menu item, either you dont care enough about it or you must look forward to this outcome.Maybe they should use your ears.

For those of you who are defending shark fin soup and shark finning....

you know... the shark's fin doesnt have any taste to it. Its more like tofu, it absorbs the flavors in the soup. So its not the shark's fin you like, it just the soup.

Bloody waste of a perfect predator if you ask me.

Dispicable and discusting.

IMO, if you condone shark finning, you dont belong on this site.

You must have had a not-so-expensive or good shark fin soup. When the 'crunchy bits' are small that is a cheapo soup. A proper (expensive) shark fin soup would have the whole fin in it. See below (not the best example cause the pieces are still pretty puny seeing that it fits into one bowl)

I assure you that if you take all the ingredients and ommit shark fin, the "shark fin" soup would taste not as good. Like most chinese soups, the taste is in the soup after boiling the soup for so long (try a proper chicken herbal soup - the chicken is almost tasteless cos the essence 'bleeds' into da soup ^^

PS: the pictured soup is only one of the varieties availalbe ... this one in is a sticky variety ... there are also clear-type varieties. mmm yum. By the way, shark fin does not need to be in the soup form only ^^

If Bengal Tigers taste good... does that make it OK to eat them?

Since when did the "good taste" have anything to do with this argument??

I dont flipping CARE if it tastes good or not. It's the complete distruction and WASTE of an animal.

This is what you are contributing to when you eat that crap

I agree. Normal fishing is fine, sport fishing for sharks (tag and release or capture) isn't a problem as its not done on a large enough scale to threaten the species, but commercial fishing of potentially endangered species for luxury food is sick IMO.

Eating sharkfin soup puts you up there with the person tht fires the harpoon into the whale IMO. Its unnecessary and greedy, and should be outlawed...

Complete waste of valueable protein. Shark meat in fish'n'chips is pretty good actually. Or at least could have used for pet food or fertilizer at least. But i guess the value of shark fin alone justifies the trip into the sea ... coulda made more money by selling the carcasses (but then again perhaps not, with the additional fuel being used-up to haul the carcasses back on land).

Hmmm, let me get back to you on the Tiger thing - one thing is sure, i won't eat feline meat ... personal thing

I assure you that shark fin soup will not taste the same without the actual shark fin. Shark fin soup prepared in the same manner as a fish maw soup(fish stomach) does not taste like shark fin soup.

And what does 'condoning shark fin soup' and 'belonging to this site' have to do with each other. Some say that keeping fish as pets, fishing for fish is cruel (where do you draw the line). Your above point about throwing shark back into water IS wasteful - i have no idea why they don't use the shark meat for food or at least for pet food. I had fish and chips made of shark in Perth, Australia - not bad and ... definitely not cheap

well arent you one to judge...

ive never even had Shark Fin soup.

and btw. im an Avid land based shark fisherman... i think i care about the health of the populations. we catch Blues, leopards, threshers, Soupfin, Great white, smoothounds, angel sharks, and even a hammer and Mako...

but you guys sure do like to attack other cultures.

Sheesh, no one is "attacking other cultures" or saying you shouldn't catch sharks. I think most people here find the idea of 'finning' disgusting, and if they don't they should probably be asking themselves some questions.
What you do is fine, sport fishing isn't likely to push sharks into extinction...

Who said that the rest of the shark was put to waste? Do you know for a fact that the shark, whos fins were used in the soup, went to waste?

I once kept two spinner sharks (the daily boat limit) just for their jaws. It was a ***** to cut them out with a dull knife. Damn skin is like leather. To make it even worse when i set the jaws on an ant bed to get cleaned, the stankin coons got to em and drug the jaws off some where! :irked:

we ate the rest of them too.
