Shipping Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like to use enough water to completely cover the fish (no more) and the rest is all O2.
Anyone have any experience with a product called bag buddies?

i thought all exporter do the same... just curious :D

Nope, previous pic shows that! Its all a matter of how safe you want to be and the risk you are willing to take...

When shipping rays it is important to use 2 square bottom bags with newspaper lined in between the 2 bags,,, the trick is to tie both bags with the same rubber band or zip tie. If you tie the bags seperately the ray will die if one of the bags is broken, popped or develops a leak.. the inner bag will implode and collapse letting all the air escape into the second bag and leaving ur ray dead in the inside bag. This is how all bags should be tied... never tie the bags individually..

makes sense, great info

I would also like to add you need more than just enough water to cover ray. I like to use 35 percent of the box height for water volume and the other 65 percent O2.

John, when shipping over night or APtoAP its ALOT different then importing.

Can you, in your experiece, tell us what is most likely to cause a DOA on these types of shipments such as lack of o2, temperature, ammonia, delays, etc and how to avoid them.

When I ship Im always more concerned about temperature. How well do the standard styro fish boxes insulate and hold temp?

r u telling me or asking me? Im not sure what the first statement means.

any shipment weather its import/export or domestic ap-ap or overnight carrier should be packed to survive 48 hrs... flights are missed boxes go missing etc...

Temperature is usually not the cause except in extreme weather......which is only with us part of the year. The thick Brazil styros hold heat well. the more water the longer it will hold the heat.

extreme heat kills as does extreme cold.

More water = more heat holding ability as well as more room for percentage of harmful water parameters....

a gallon of water will pollute faster than 3 gallons of water any day of the week.

to be honest I think the large shipemnt of leos posted about earlier was a combo

too long in box,,,, to many boxes of rays in shipments. Like I said earlier ask me to carry 10 lightbulbs across the room I can handle it... ask me to carry 1000 and a large percentage will be broken b4 i reach the other side of the room....

to those that posted that the rays were probably fed b4 shipment know noting about Brazil... do you think they were feeding the rays? the only thing in those rays bellies were rusted hooks from the fishermans bait lines....

when shipping a ray 1 to a box you should have very little doa when shipping times are under 36 hrs

i would also like to bring up something,... its not the fact that wc rays arent hardy etc the fact that they break down or dont eat when newly imported is in my opinion because of the great deal of stress from the shipping and capture process. When shipping a ray domestically ap-ap if you ship a newly imported weak ray u have issues if you ship a ray that is a settled 1 yr captive it ships just as good as a cb ray. its the getting them out of the river and into the usa that does the most stress

John, I was stating that import from foreign countries to the US and domestic shipping I assumed where different and asked your input for domestic shipping.

Apparently its not too different and youve provided us with lots of good information!

Something maybe reddevildon is hinting at...sedatives. For small fish I dont think its needed but what about large powerful animals say a 12" ATF. How would one ship that? Sorry if its a derail but I suppose for large rays it could be useful..

RDD, some people have asked me to put ammonia neutralizers like Prime in my shipments but I havnt as I know they decrease o2 but I dont know how much or at what point is less o2 but less ammonia or more o2 and a chance of ammonia is better. Anyone know if Prime is beneficial or not?
