SHOALING AFRICAN PIKES

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
DBJunkie-I love your PETA analogy-think I'm gonna eat a juicy burger with jalapenos and bacon for luch. LOL!
Bottom line Caribe-do what makes you happy I am simply going by experince and a lot of research. My friend David loves these fish he also has (not in the same tank) Hujeta Gar, Red Tail Cuda, and Maculata, and he has done hours upon hours of research so I take his word and I have seen his tanks-fish are really happy. Try it you obviously know enough since you are on this site and are responsible. Once again no one is saying to put the fish in 10 gallon or even 125. Good luck-awesome fish.

so any pics at all of a specimen live or dead over a foot long anywhere?

Why would fishbase lie?

DBJunkie-From what David told me based on his research is that these fish do better in schools, will fight other fish of similar shape or color, and only get two feet in the wild. He says he will talk to a farmer who has had these for awhile-so hopefully I can get some more info later.

Everyone's experiences are different. Mine don't fight with a Rhaphiodon. Been housed together since the day I brought them home (almost a year). Definetly same color.... Shape may be questionable....

I think just like other Characins diet may play a part in aggressiveness towards other fish.... My Odoe are pretty mellow..... But have never had live food (from my understanding) I have had feeders in with them and have never seen them eat one.

Kind of like cichlids every fish is different. You see he tried to house them with his Red Tail Cuda, Hujeta Gar, and Maculata-the Odoes went crazy and attacked the others-so he had to move them. And yes every now and then he does feed them live food-he has a lot of African Cichlids that breed so he uses those as food for the Pikes and others.

Wow! Ms. Poly thanks for the input-awesome point! Bottom line we are not talking about Dovii or RTC we are talking about a fish that in the wild maxes out at 2 feet and have the girth of hot dog! Don't compare an Arowana to this fish-we are talking apples and oranges. I agree there are fish out there like an Arowana that are put in tanks to small! But Odoes don't grow to the size or girth of a Arowana-plus we are not saying to put an Odoe in a 55 gallon tank-we are saying 180 would be fine since it's width is 2 feet.

really?
cause many of the big odoes ive seen are as thick or thicker than an asian aro of the same size.

two inches thick tops is what i seen with my own eyes. listen if you have a picture of one bigger than 13'' please let me see and i will believe you guys:popcorn:

channarox-sure man I believe you-okay! They are also as thick as RTC and Alligator Gar! LOL!! Dude do you know what fish we are talking about?
