Why would fishbase lie?

The longer you hang around fish forums, the more you realize a lot of fish don't get nearly as big as "fish websites" say they do.

They aren't really lying... they are either getting confused with wild caught specimens or they are just plain misinformed.

A lot of people over estimate how big there fish are and it leads to myths about the correct max captive size of a fish.

If people really can't find a SINGLE picture of something in this day and age it should really make you pause.

(I have no knowledge of odoe pikes personally but this topic is very common with other fish as well)

Typical hobbyists and dedicated hobbyists are way different.

Are you going to grow them to the same size as wild? NO. Should you be able to get them 2/3 yup.... With proper care. I'm not going to accept that 1/2 max wild size is all the bigger you can get them in an aquarium. It tells me the tank isn't big enough, not enough food, or some other issue.

I'll do my my best to provide for these fish what I feel is an adequate enviroment. If they only get a foot then hey, everyone's right. IF they get bigger then there was an improvement made somewhere.

Just cause you haven't seen it sure doesn't mean it doesn't exist or isn't possible.

shamrock, really?did you know african pikes are pretty available here?
they come in by the dozens when theyre in season.;)
we are talking about hepsetus odoe...correct?:)
i myself have owned a few.
i havent kept them myself past 12",but i HAVE seen 14 inchers at an lfs...
no,i didnt have my camera.;)
since you have so much expertise in keeping these fish i'll just stop giving advice now.
cause apparently, all my advice isnt needed and you can give PROPER advice and i cant.
if you say its fine to keep them in a 180g for life, they will never surpass 12",then i guess youre right.

caribe,
take whatever advice you want.
ive given MY opinion and advice on the matter, and take it or leave it it doesnt matter to me.:)

This is point less. He's going to keep them in that small tank and let the get stunted and die prematurely. It sucks but I think everyone who has told him it is a bad idea has done all that they can. Some people are just BAD fish keepers. I know myself has done this before but I learned not to house large fish in small tanks. Its a shame he's going to do it but he will learn his lesson, just sucks for the amazing fish that are going to be unlucky to be bought buy by him.

And not everyone has told him this is a bad idea!! Are you calling myself and my friends bad fishkeepers? I mean have you actually taken the time to fly to El Paso and come see my friends tank? Probably not, so how can you know these fish are unhappy. Get a grip! It's not like he is putting them in a 55 gallon tank-we are not talking about RTC or Paroon Shark-we are talking about a fish that maxes out at 12-14 inches-plus I haven't seen any proof of these fish getting to two feet in captivity-and even if they did they would still be fine in a 2 foot wide tank.
