shouldnt this filter setup handle these fish?

API Master. Come to think of it, most of the people on AC use the API Master, also, and i don't know if it is Nessler based. Actually, I don't think it is..let me check a couple things.

Edit: Just looked at yours and it's API also, but a different type.

Interesting.

So Amquel + no worky with Nessler either. Here is some interesting info from their faq:
" For your information the salicylate test kit is the preferred kit for aquarium and pond keeping because it reads the low end of the range 0-1.0 approx. ppm (mgL). Even a small amount of ammonia less than 1.0 is toxic to aquarium and pond fishes. It is very important to read this low range. The nesslers kit reads in a range up to 9 or 10 ppm (mgL). It was originally developed for live sea food, such as lobsters, crab and shrimp, and mollusks, for which readings of several and more ppm (mgL) of ammonia are important in their survival."

Maybe a little biased, since their product doesn't work with it

And another doozy:
"
The original AmQuel only detoxifies the nitrogen compounds ammonia, and to a modest extent other nitrogen compounds such as nitrites and the toxic pheromones in the water. AmQuel+ detoxifies to the full extent all of the toxic nitrogen compounds in the water, including ammonia, nitrites, nitrates. AmQuel+ also detoxifies all the other toxic nitrogen compounds in the water that have no names other than their chemical formulas. And an important function of AmQuel+ is that it detoxifies all the toxic pheromones that fishes continually give off in their signalling and repelling of each other.

..... We have found that under these circumstances AmQuel+ will detoxify/remove up to 85 ppm nitrates in a single dose."

on the hob i rinse the carbon and rinse the bags

on the w/d i just rinse the felt pads

i do this about every time i do a w/c

same with gravel vacing
:irked:
when u do water change.. keep the "old" water and use it to rise your pad and stuff.. that will ensure you dont killed all your bio load...

hmm thats odd if it happend in both tanks .could your prime have gone bad , also try to wash your pads in tank water that makes sure your not adding any un safe water to your aquarium.
