wow, my vote goes to lucy the rtc.

some of the things that i've read about octopus in captivity makes them seem really smart.

oscars are really smart, i don't know why you think they are dumb. all cichlids really are pretty smart.

i once had a discus that would beat my cat at chess, but that's for another thread!

windsurfer.

i was just about to mention the octopus.

oscars just dont seem to solve any problems, they are very hungry, and fun to watch, but maybe my problem with them is their lack of agression. they are 2x larger than the JD's and TX Ch's but cant seem to compete. i have to feed them separately !
Even the convicts manage to get all the way from the bottom of the tank, and steal the food from them when its right in their face.

ID sharks are downright mentally handicapped, no denying it they are dumb as hell I have one and he is officially retarded.

The things the other guy said about them were right on and it doesn't even end there.I mean yeah, I know they like current, but a 13" ID shark constantly trying to push his way inside my FX5 output? :screwy:

TT eels are pretty stupid too fire eels are better but not by much.

as for the smartest fish I ever owned I'm not sure but sometimes my 12" BGK amazes me with the things he does.

Fish only need a specific brain size to comtrol thier life. I mean, what Whale has the mental capacity to use its brain to escape under some cliffs when being persued by whalers? Fish only need to know how to survive naturally. Is it therefore that usually smaller to midsize, alert fish are smarter. But in a body to brain size ratio, the elephant nose (Mormymid) has a larger one then that of a human, yet are they 'smart'?

My ACF (not really a fish I guess) has to be the dumbest thing in my tank. He can smell food, and will swim around scooping water towards his face, but he'll come to rest sitting on top of a chunk of meat without touching it. He will gobble anything that he actually catches by accident, but he's completely useless at finding it.

My goldfish "Buddy" isn't too bright either. He tries to snuggle my oscar, and loses a scale or two, then goes to snuggle my bronze knife, and gets chased around for half an hour... then goes back to the oscar for love. *shake*

I wouldn't say any of the fish in my tank are overly bright :p Although, if my oscar wants something, he will find a way to get at it, even if it means rearranging the tank. I'm not sure what kind of oscar isn't an agressive feeder... I have to watch my fingers when I feed mine, and he's well fed!

Meanest I've got has to be the bronze knife... I call him simply "angry". In the week I've had him, he's decided he didn't like my big moss ball, and has torn a bunch of tufts out of it. He's uprooted some of my more fragile plants, and he'll square off against anyone who gets close to him. Oh and he likes chasing Buddy around :p

just goes to show ya brain size doesn't dictate intelligence.
and no problem jd300. hope u learn as much from this site as we all have.

Wow, that RTC sounds like an aquatic genius!!! Octospus are really smart too, along with cuttlefish, but they don't count on this thread since they're inverts. I've seen some pretty smart triggerfish around as well. One in the carribean figured out that eat would be easier to catch food if it pinned it against my body and then bit down on it (along with my skin!!!!).
