Solo Fish 125g Suggestions (Not Cichlids, Maybe)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Pink Chalceus has really sparked my interest. This would be a solo recommendation for this tank correct? I am seeing recommendations as well to keep them in school but other members are saying thats when the aggression comes out.

Keep in school or solo. Differently not in pairs.

Midsized puffer for sure! If I had a free 125, for sure. They are like owning a dog. ?

If you like the look of chalceus, you might also consider a Hepsetus odoe. They look awesome, grow to around 12” and have a lot of personality for a characin.
Iirc they get a bit bigger than 12", HarleyK HarleyK

Howdy,

my biggest concern with a Chalceus or an African Odoe pike are that they are active swimmers, in the case of odoe: explosive swimmers. I had them in a 6 foot 220 gallon tank, the Chalceus ate all my plants and damaged themselves by running into the glass. The odoe is OK in a 6 foot tank, but spook easily. No problem if you tank is in a quiet spot. 1 foot is about right.

Dude me and you are looking for the exact same thing in a tank lol. Heterotilapia buttikoferi really sparked my interest, as well as Silver Datnoids (they max 10-12”)

Any piranha species?

My LFS has a feisty female for sale at about the 12in mark, I was stuggling not to get her as I could probaby have had her for free as she was harrassing a pack of large silver dollar and a 18in knife of some kind (grey). I have heard they will keep growing past that point so its a bit big for my 18in deep tank.

The silver dats could be cool just dont know how they would do in a bare tank, never looked into dats.

Any piranha species?

I pretty sure they are illegal in WA.
