If your teachers keep putting potentially giant fish in rediculously small tanks, you could probably complain to the principal about it. If I were you, I'd print out plenty of information identifying the species being kept (to prove your teacher is wrong), along with a print-out of its care requirements). Set up an appointment with an administrator. Explain to them in a well thought out argument why your teacher should not be keeping such a fish. If you just go in whining that your teacher doesn't believe you, you'll probably get ignored.

If that gets you no where, have your parent(s) call and complain to administrators (principal, etc). A phone call from a parent usually will spur action.

chef, as fun as that sounds and i would probably do it. :D I have to agree w/ bpags. My art teacher had about 5 tanks spread across her room. She had a 75g, that was huge to me as a elementary schooler, that had 2 turtles. Well someone thought it was funny to feed the turtles some crayon bits. Turtles ended up dying and the kid got away with it. She was so depressed that she took down the rest of the tanks and the room was pratically dead as compared to before with all the inspiration by the fish. :(

how sad.. you gotta hate those kids that do crap for attention..
pisses me off! fortunately for me.. none of my teachers had tanks... buut, i did save 2 9 inch oscars that were in a 10 gallon.. pretty interesting, lol

please give us the school name so we can bombard the principal or better yet get ahold of peta the enviro terrorist

You know that we're in a sad state of being when students know more than the teachers that are supposed to know about particular topics.
Totally agree

I think its one thing when you are just a person who unfortunately didn't get well informed, but to have this happen in a school...by a teacher? That is just appalling.

I agree with people above.. report her! Report her to anyone willing to listen - be it the principal or report her to some rescue organization.
Eek...that's easier said than done! I don't think the principal cares much either...

It would take a "special" kind of person to mistake a pacu for a piranha after owning 1 already. the size difference is huge. the fact she keeps calling it a piranha tells all especially if youve informed her that it is in fact a pacu. its like a little kid "nuh uh thats a piranha cuz i want a piranha more". Buy her a medal and tell her shes special then hit the tank with a hammer.

Lol, special teacher:D

Unfortunately there's more of those kind of kids :irked::( Actually, I don't remember ever being taught to respect nature really in school, I was by my parents.

Not all teachers are like that-I for one am a 5th grade teacher and run the schools 55 gallon tank.
Pair of Convicts, Rainbow Shark, and Tiger Barbs as dithers.
Everyday parents ask me how I get the water so clean and ask advice on how to start a tank or how to remedy a problem they have. As a matter of fact I assign a student a fish and for the last 2 weeks of school do research and provide a presentation to the class on his/her fish. Only problem I have is that parents complain that their child now wants a tank. LOL!!

One more point as far kids doing bad things to fish-that is because they don't respect their teacher. Doing that would not even cross my students mind for a second. Kids know if your a phony or you really care. When I have a sub I never worry my students are extremely vigilant and make sure no one would sabotage the school tank.
