Somethings wrong with my water? (Big fish kill)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 hours ago, While on my way to Kumdo class, (sword fighting) I saw near the road near my barn that there were 7 pickup trucks parked.

I pulled over and talked to the guys about what was up?
The trucks were all from the local Rural Water company.
The workers said that there were getting ready to find a water leak near my house.
They said that the Rural water company had been looking for a large leak for the last two weeks and they found it near the back of my barn where the water line is crossing a ditch.
The loss is about 10gal every min...so it's a LOT of water, but oddly hard to notice given the ditches are full of water anyway due to the snow melting.

I asked the top rural water guy about my 20+ dead fish in my aqauriums?
and he told me that over the last two weeks while they looked for the water leak that they had switched my area of the Township off of the normal "rural water" and that we were now connected by some over-ground pipes to the 'city water" of Grand Forks ND water system.

He said that the city had bumped up the amount of "Chloramine" in thier water to make sure we didnt get sick from the temp above-ground water lines they laied while they searched for the unknown water leak all last week.

SO, the answer is...Chloramine
.as I was told by many on this forum!!!!!!

My tap water did infact change as I guessed, and it was the addition of Chloramine to my tap water that killed all my fish.

Im told that once the leak is found and fixed that they will switch us all back to normal Rural water that only has normal chlorine in it and not chloramine.

Told you!!!:grinno::grinno: J/K.

you know, it's odd, but I bet Im the only one in my township who had guessed what was going on with our water, and Now Im the only one with a backhoe digging in their field too.....

it's a small world....

Weird that I picked the moment to get one tank going and change water on another at the only time in the last 10 years when there was a problem with Chloramine in our water.....

I'm just glad it was something you can take care of easily with just some water conditioner. Good luck with your pond and post plenty of pics, The Doctor

Oh I will, and videos too.
One weird thing I have found however, is that posting on YouTube is always asking for trouble.
I dont understand why, but YouTube is a nasty place filled with nasty comments.

Totally different than here!
What I have seen here is that everyone wants to see what everyone else is up to.
Anyone who starts a topic here can expect a few requests for photos because people are very much very interested in getting to know what we all are up to.
There is real "support" for each other here on this forum, and not any of that "You fool" comments I see on many other fish forums.

not sure why?

All i know is that my little pond is nothing compared to many of the real monster ponds that many here have.
my little DIY filter is next to nothing compared to some of the grand saltwater tank filters you guys have spent tons of money on.

yet I get a LOT of help from this forum.
Guys who are real experts offer good advice and seem to understand what a DIYer guy can be expected to do himself, and whats always going to be out of our reach.

I hope Im able to make my future pond posts interesting to read, and to post interesting photos and perhaps videos that show you guys my little pond in a way to help everyone see that I did the best i could with my little pond, and it's all based on the advice I received from this forum.

and about posting some photos...If the rural water people show up in the morning, and if they start digging in my yard to fix a problem that has also been the reason I had all my fish die, you bet I'm going to take some photos of the action!...

Who knows, pehape in a few hours you may get to see some photos of a work crew digging and showing just how much money my little topic about my water problem is dealing with....LOL

Me thinks water conditioner is way cheaper then replacing fish!

yes, ...I have to agree...I lost 20+ fish last week.
Some of the fish I had had for years, they had names.

Not really all my fault as we have come to see...the tap water changed on me after being the same for over 10 years, so I never had a chance and the fact that i wanted to be a good pet owner and keep my tanks fresh with a 25% water change, only ended up doing more harm than good...

Live and learn....Live and learn...

i am happy to hear that this situation will come to an end and that so many replys were right on about the water ..it is amazing how many MFK people are educated and knowledgable from a-z ...now i learned something as well.. too bad though that town water supplier do not warn a family of significant change in water.. just a simple note would have prevented all those fish deaths and money..
