Somethings wrong with my water? (Big fish kill)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, I know the lfs tested your water, but I wonder if they tested for nitrite and nitrate. In RURAL areas, well water is often very contaminated with nitrites and nitrates from fertilizers used in farming. These nitrates are often in such high concentrations that they can cause birth defects and miscarriages in humans.

Yes, I asked them to test for them, and in both tests the water checked out very good.
In the last water test there was no readings that were bad for any of the things you can test for with a kit.

UPDATE!
The fish are alive and doing fine!!!!!!

So this points us to the idea that for some unknown reason, my tap water turned deadly to fish during my water changes.

DEATH TOTALLS?
12 fish died in the smaller tank,,,,about 20 in the larger tank.
Some of the larger fish had names and were part of the family for about 5 or 6 years.

The reason?
I did not use any water conditioner at first.

Why Not?
I never have needed to before. 20 plus years of water changes with the same tap water , I only raise Goldfish, and so there never was even a hint of a problem.
I have 3 fish tanks and have always tried to do 25% changes once a month for each tank....
20 years, and no problem.

How did it happen again?
I had a smaller 40gal tank that was empty. I filled it with tap water, turned on the filter and allowed it to filter the water for 7 days before i added fish.
All fish died.
I drained all the water and filled again and again let filter run for 7 days before I added fish.
All fish died once again.

I did a 25% water change on a 100gal tank.
100 gal tank had about 20 goldfish up to 6-7 inchers.
All fish died.

Added water conditioner as per advice of forum here, Conditioner was aimed at fixing the un-testable "Chlormine" problem with my tap water.

Repleced fish in both smaller and larger tanks.
All fish in smaller tank dead within 24 hours.
all fish in larger tank still alive and doing well

Replaced dead fish with 4 new goldfish.
48 hours later all fish are alive.

Got more Goldfish and added to smaller tank.
24 hours later all are fine and very active.

RESULTS OF WHOLE MESS?
I think the people that pump me the tap water from the county deep wells have added something new to the water now that it's spring and the fields where the wells are dug are all under water.
Whatever they added to the tap water, is different than what i have been dealing with for years and so i was totally not ready to deal with the situation and lost all my fish....a few times....

LIVE AND LEARN......about all i can say now....live and learn I guess

I'm glad everything worked out and you found a simple answer.

makes sense..i just hope theres a way to detect it in your water so your not off quard with issues of losing fish.. maybe you should inquire what this new addititive is and test for it when you need too..
