Somethings wrong with my water? (Big fish kill)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"You can bet that when I start to fill my indoor pond in a few weeks that I will have some of the ""prime" made by Seachem " to be sure!
(lets hope it is the answer)"

I would make sure everything is okay before filling the pond. Since you have a few weeks, I would fill a tank, add conditioner and fish and see how it goes. You don't want to fill a pond, add expensive fish and have them all die again because it might be something else. The Doctor.

Hey kumdoalan, sure has been a lot of chatter since yesterday.

I'm not even going to try and correct the disinformation :nilly:just move on.

Except for one, never use straight 100% R.O. water only in your tank (you can look that up later).

Are the new fish doing well (not just surviving)?

Ask your water supplier what they treat the water with... chlorine, ammonia, or chlorimines. You really do need to contact them

Do you have a water softener?

For future reference, you can install a filter system for your aquariums similar to this... http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=129753-43353-WHED10&lpage=none

Just hook it between the hose and the aquarium.

.
well....not too good.
I just checked and the 4 goldfish in the 40 gal tank are all dead.

so, thats 12 goldfish in 3 weeks.......all dead.

The 4 in the larger tank are doing fine..

So, lets assume that the 40 gal tank is in need of a complete breakdown , a good cleaning, and a starting over right?

I will collect the dead fish in a bag, get a water sample, thewn drain and begin to clean the tank one more time.

any suggestions different?

oh i am sorry to hear this is still a big problem.. sounds like the only thing you can do for starters again... is this well that you get your water from a deep well or shallow well.. has there been alot of drainoff from snow rain etc..maybe you should also get a water test for bacteria if you also drink it..

Over here in the uk during the summer the water company use higher levels of chlorine and chlorimines, for the exact reason i`m unsure but i do know it`s a big killer of just about any fish so if i was you i`d go to your lfs and get some pond dechlorinator..

It`s alot cheaper and will work out a hell of alot cheaper for you with all of the tanks you have..
10ml does 100 uk gallons and with aquarium dechlorinator 10ml only does about 3.
I would also get a syringe and measure the right amount out for each container of water you put back in the tank as this will be better than putting the water in then treating the whole tank in one go.
A good way to do this would be to mix however many ml`s you need with say half a pint of water so the the measurements will be easier to make than it would be breaking 10ml down to say 15 applications worth.

If you do want to carry on refilling the tank from a hose then remember you`ll have to treat the whole volume of the tank and not just the volume of water you`re replacing

Good luck mate

I don't hold high hopes for the big tank's fish, I just hope I'm wrong. What ever caused this could just be diluted in it.

We need that info.

Anyone in the family had a stomach type virus recently (possibly from the water)?

If your cleaning the tank in the house (to cold outside ;)), use the bathtub and clean with soap & water (I use Ajax antibacterial orange (no lanolins so your tank won't be soft)), then rinse well with hot water a couple of times then rinse again.

If it is only chlorimines killing the fish then that's enough washing, but if it's not we need to find out what it is that's in the water.

When it gets warm here they add extra chlorine to combat algae blooms in the water.

Let's see how the fish do till Monday when you can call he water company.

well....I going to clean the 40 gal tank, and start over.

Suggestions for how to get it going once clean?
The filter for this 40gal tank is just one of them drop-in types. It has charcoal inside it and a powerhead type pump.

Remember, this all started as just a means to get a head start on the time when I try to get my indoor pond running. I didnt want to sink a lot of money into this, but what the heck is going on???.....12 fish in 3 different attempts and the water tests fine?

I just wanted for cheap goldfish handy for helping to get the main pond filter cycled.

Unless I missed it, have you tried using a water conditioner yet. I haven't seen you mention it at all. The Doctor.
