Errr, no. Typically its on the side next to the wall, so theres nothing to do but strip it down! I knew I'd jinx it with pics... I shouldnt have listened to you...2 days after I posted:grinno:.

Two questions:

Anyone work with galvanised steel? Do I need to worry about metal fume fever if I anglegrind it?

I'm gonna put them in the front now, cause they are to be the heart of an aquaponics system and all the suns in the front garden, but its a gentle slope (paved), how would you level the tanks. 2 ideas...wood box filled with sand, or 4 brick pillars supporting 4by4's?

I wonder what punctured it?

I've always worn a respirator and if you're going to be doing that much work I'd think you would want to be around to enjoy it afterwards ;)

You're not wanting to cut into the paving (concrete?)?

I'd ask for a pic of the but I don't want to chance of your 'front' leaking:nilly:.

Don't cut them until you've seen this... http://sarasota.craigslist.org/for/586669884.html connect them :D

Oh my GOD...That is SOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOL!!! 4ft diameter!!!! I wish I were rich! My angels would LOVE that!

When you say respirator's are they breathing bottles, or masks and cartriges?

I dont want to dig in because I want to raise the tank as much as possible. The extra height will allow extra growbeds... Going to try a flood drain system this time, I want to feed the water by gravity and then pump it back into the tank.

My ideas:

1st lets just deal with the one water tank thats open on the top and ready to go.

Given the size of the monster, I would want to be able to get up and be able to look down into it.
If your house does not have a tall deck then I would dig a hole in the yard and countersink it down to the point where it's viewable from above.

NOW, as for the old fuel tank..
Given that it needs the top cut off and other holes pluged I would ask at a gas station how do they work on car gas tanks?
how do they weld and cut on car gas tanks without them blowing up?

Then just turn the tank on it's side and cut the top off.

Once the top is cut and the other holes in it are welded shut, I would just use a good cleaner and a big powerfull presure washer to clean the tank.
If that did not work, just use a normal pond liner with some plywood and styroform sheets between the liner and the tank.

Countersink both tanks in the yard with a "water bridge" or a stream going from one to the other so that you only need one pond filter.
You WILL NEED A FENCE!
The tanks are too big to allow kids or pets a chance to fall in.
There is a risk here thats greater than the risk most pond owners face with smaller 3 or 4 foot deep ponds.
A pond 6 feet deep is always going to be a cause of concern for anyone who lives around you with kids
A fence is going to always be part of the plan to use such empty tanks.
(Also a hang on the side pool ladder might also be a good idea)
