Tanks suck for monitors and tegus, they dsont hold humidty well, and arent deep enough for burrowing. Blue tegus are cheap, and look nice. www.bluetegu.com has really god pics and care articles for red and blue tegus, but they do not have animals available at this time, and they wont for a while. Although, a person I have talked to by the name of Dan will be producing CB Albino Blues and Powder Blues soon, possibly this year, or next and will be selling them for $200, possibly cheaper. You can check him out at www.chaosreptiles.com He's a really nice guy, I have talked to him a few times on myspace, very eager to give advice and I'm sure he'd help you out with tegus if you emailed him or whatever, He has alot of Tegus, reds, blues, columbians, argentines, aswell as venomous snakes, lizards, and crocodilians. He's even supplied zoo's before If I remember correctly. Very nice guy.

cool thanks for the links
:)
Ill check those out.

and jessica,
Ive had tegus and black throat monitors on my mind for atleast 4 years, Its just I dont want to buy something and then not properly care for it when it reaches adult size... So i waited and learned as much info as I could find on the net, and still wanting to know more about them. But I will be perchusing a few juvies withen the next 8 months from a buddy of mine that has some, but not until after I build a proper setup and what not.

No problem bro. I'd get a blue tegu if I could, been wanting one for like two years now, but I dont have the space. Hope you can get one! Post pics when you get the little beauty.

All I'm saying is if your unsure..Don't. For the time being anyway. I'm not having a go love. I just know what it likes to have a 4/5 foot lizard suddenly turn on you one day, and then having to face dealing with that everytime you come near the viv ;) By then, most will palm them off, but I took a commitment on when I bought her so I'm gonna keep her for life. It's still hard and an ENORMOUS responsibilty. She's been passed along 3 times already and I won't make it a fourth. Just think about that before you get one. If it bites you, so bad you need stitches, if it tail whips you because your trying to feed it, if you need two people to restrain it too give it a bath/clean it out, if it attacks you when you let it roam...are you still going to keep it? You still gonna love it? Cos it can, and depending on the species you aquire of course, more than likely will happen one day. Thats all :)

And monitors are ALOT meaner/dangerous when they are being mean than iggies. Not to mention bigger ;)

I have scars all over my arms from handling her, although she doesn't mean it, she rips my arms open so easily. Imagine one TRYING to hurt you. Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to talk you out of this, I'm not, I just don't think you realise yet how powerful these animals are, so I'm just trying to help, before you buy one :)

yeah I know, Ive seen it happen before with a big water monitor. Your not talking me out of it, just making sure Im making a good decision and commitment towards keeping whatever I decide to get. And I will deffinatly keep it for life, no matter what i get.

As for lizard im getting, Im really loving the albino/blue and red tegus, even though I know reds are alot of work, and need a varied diet. I love them, If i can get a decent enclosure done by the summer im going to be picking up a few juvies, either red or blue(If I can find some).

but thanks for your help guys
:)

Go to http://www.varanus.net or http://www.thetegu.com. If you decide which you want, STILL check out both of them. Im a regular member on varanus under this same name if you want to find me.

For purchasing, Agama International, Sisco Reptiles, and Varnyard are the best in the biz.

Dude, argus monitors get 5 feet and Black throats can get 7. You said nothing above 4? Hmm.... Argentine giant tegus can get 5 as well.

Ive had tegus and ackies on my mind for years, I truly want one. I did the research as if I was about to get one. So if you have questions, Im not Mr.-know-it-all, but I know the jist of it.

Btw, there is NO WAY of getting around building an enclosure.

As for tegus, DO NOT get a gold or an argentine. Golds have a terrible knack for being aggresive and 99% of them are wild caught. Argentines perhaps make the best pets of ANY large lizard, but they get 5 feet plus, and you wantd below 4. If you can provide the space though, they are your best bet. Blues and reds are wonderful and both below 4 feet normally. As for as monitors, they are NOT handling pets like a tegu, but they are simply a treat to own. Ackies. 'Nuff said.

Good luck in your search!

nice thanks for the links loco
:)

Im really liking the red tegus, but if i can find some cheap snow tegu or albino's
:naughty:
if not just gunna get a pair of reds. What you think?

I wouldnt get a pair, you could end up with babies, and I dont think thats a good idead when its your first tegu. Get one, enjoy it, and later on get more. LOTS more. :D
