starter monitor or tegu?

have some suggestions/questions though.
1. instead of a little water bowl can i have like a built in tub that is built in so they can swim in rather than just a quick soak?
2. can I add like 2 feet of substrate so they can burrow in or no because they can get compaction or whatever?

I agree on how tank suck for moitors I turned a closet into a enclouser changed out the door to porch door (glass)
Only 2 feet of substrate? Dude your in SoCal, you could use 3 times that outdoors. Dont even worry about impaction. With a normal burrowing substrate like plain ol' DIRT, it wont be a problem.
And with the water, do what you want. They arent swimmers, itll only make it harder to build and a pain to clean. A plain ol' water dish is fine. Normally they would only soak if they had parasites or a bad shed, which shouldnt happen anyway if you keep them right

well the 2 feet i was talking about the little enclosure in the garage i was planning on building (8x4x4) so it would be 8 feet long x 4 feet deep and 2 feet of height on top of the dirt.
as for species im thinking of going with a red, read some things on the blues where they have alot of problems being hybrids or something, so there out of the question for me. But yeah the out door one in my backyard will be huge, im thinking about 14-15'long by 8-10'wide and like 6-8'tall so i think that will be plenty even if i decide to get two or not?
