Still Going To LFS You Don't Like?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't really understand how a lot of people hate paying $10 more than they would really want to pay for a fish (I'm not talking about guppies here). I mean really.....Consider how long that fish is likely to live. If that is the fish you want, just get it. $10 over 10 years is nothing. It's just not worth waiting 6 months hoping that the price will come down a measly $10 if that is the fish that you really want. And put it in perspective. Think about how much money you've dumped into your whole set up.....The fish aren't all that expensive when compared to the set up itself.

Anyway, back to the subject.....I only have a petco here. It's good as far as petco's go. The people there are actually knowledgable, and the fish are REALLY well cared for. But there isn't really anything cool there. I mostly only buy giant danio dithers there, and I'm currently raising a GT from there (growing very nicely and showing good colors btw). I just hate that there isn't anywhere really close to me that has interesting stuff.

I do, however, have about 5 really nice shops within driving distance (they are about an hour away). But they are still too far to just pop in and see what they have on a whim.

My store is the same way, were selling sterbai corydoras for 8$, I had a bunch of 1-1.5 inch babys that I raised and asked if they would give me store credit for like 3$ a pop, they said no but would be happy to take them from if I cant find a buyer...greedy

Those type of stores pi*s me off the most. I went to one store and tried to trade in a 9" endlicheri bichir and I was only asking $10 credit for it. This store sells endli bichirs for $35 and they're about 3-4" long. (If you live in the Orange County area, you know which store I'm talking about). The guy didn't want to take in my trade but said he would take it in for free if I couldn't find a buyer. It's hard to believe how greedy people are even in this bad economy.

Here's another story about that lfs (I'm not giving the name as it's just free publicity for them) I don't like...

I saw that they had a Lapradei. It was probably around 7" I've been wanting one for quite some time and I asked how much it was since it wasn't marked. He told me $40. I'd figured I'd wait it out and see if he'll drop the price since I didn't think anyone would be interested in that Lap any time soon. It looked like a trade in. When I first found this place, the guy told me he didn't do trade ins or take fish from hobbyist because he didn't want to deal with parasites and/or disease, but I started to think that since this was the only Lap they had and it was fairly big compared to fish size they would normally carry, it must've been from a trade in. So a month and a half went by and I asked him again...$40. I waited another 3 weeks and told him to bag it up. He tried to charge me $55:eek: I told him that he said $40 last time I asked. He then tried to tell me that the market value for this fish went up and he needs to keep up with the market value...now if he really did buy this fish for resale and he bought it before the market value went up, it still wouldn't have affected his profit margin since he got it before the price inflation:screwy: I ended up getting it for $40, but not after we gave each other a hard time about it.
That guy sounds like a real Dbag...Market value,it's a fish not a chunk of gold.

If I was really worried about saving a few bucks, I'd be shopping in the Marketplace. The fact that he told me $40 and then tries to charge me $55 and blame it on market value inflation is nonsense. There are stores that are just greedy and shady. Why do I keep going there? I don't know...it's a big store and it has a lot to look at. Usually, I almost don't buy anything from them.

Yeah.....That's shady of him to up the price on you at that point. I don't disagree with you on that at all.

But I don't understand why you waited for months after he told you he wasn't coming off of $40. I mean what's the difference between $30 and $40 in the long run if it's the fish that you REALLY want, and you're going to keep it for a long time.

And FYI.....my post wasn't geared specifically to your situation. I've seen a lot of people asking if a 3" GT for $8 is a good deal. I mean.....Really??? That fish is going to live for 15 years if you care for it correctly. What is the difference? Especially when you spent $40 on that cool pink castle

There was this LFS I used to go to almost every week -- I think we spent between $3,000-$4,000 there in a little under 8 months. Anyway, at this point we are really into the hobby - so we start looking for cheaper ways to get some things (i.e. CL deals, drfostersmith, big als, etc) -- so we start looking for another tank, and go to this LFS and ask about sump tanks. The store owners take the time to explain it to us, how it works, etc... we decide it is something we could setup on our own, so we buy a 180g off of CL. Month or so later (still shopping at this LFS meanwhile) we call and ask a question about the local water supply - we were just getting into understanding pH, etc. and had bought a pH meter but wanted to know some qualities about the water where we used to live. LFS tells us they can't provide tech support for things that were not purchased at their store, and then goes on to ***** me out for 'wasting their time' a month ago, for asking questions about sumps and then not buying the tank and sump from them... Was kind of a bummer, I liked that store... but I wasn't going to continue to go there knowing that if I wanted to ask a question I better be committed to a purchase that same day, especially after spending so much money there in such a short amount of time, and then getting treated like that...So, we didn't go back after that, ended up moving to Boise anyway a few months later (2 years ago now) so it worked out...

BUT THEN I did bite the bullet and go back in there last time I was in town to see the family... they used to have really good prices on driftwood, but since I was there last they either upped their prices or just flat out over charged me - driftwood was way more expensive than it used to be (almost double), didn't know that until I got to the register but at that point I was like screw it, just buy it and GTFO

Wooooow.....That is junky. Probably the worst I've heard.

How can they get angry with you when you have spent that much at their store.

I'd have had some explicit things to say to them if they had treated me like that.

Reason why I waited was because I wasn't in too much of a hurry to buy one. I've been wanting one, but needed to make some room before I could get it. There are a couple places I go to where they give good deals on trade ins and lowers the prices if no one takes it within a few weeks. A little over 4 months ago, Rainbow Pet shop in Arleta had an 7"-8" Royal Pleco that they were selling for $40. Now that's a deal;)
