stingray floating on top of water?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ya, when you can, a.s.a.p. get a teser you can read.. you need it.
when the tank finishes cycling, you wont have as much trouble, but you really need now that the air problem is fixed, to keep testig the water to make sure its in range.
As you already said and now earthstudent said, that 125 will not work for all three rays, for now you are ok, but in time, they will out grow that tank. Just be aware that that many rays in that small of a tnk will cause more polution and you will need to keep metering the water and have to do more changes.. At least once a week if not a 40% once a week and a 25% in the same week. So, when you can, get a meter you can read. Enjoy...

rays are doing amazing. very active again and eating like true little monsters.
I just they don't grow too fast I don't wanna have to get rid of them too soon

were you able to get the airstones working again???

these guys are eating like champs again,
I can put some bloodworms in they destroy them and in 5 minutes are looking for more.

I tried frozen krill, they take it but it's still too big for their mouths. Gonna go to Wal-Mart and get some more earth/trout worms because I know they are healthier.

Also, I think you said somewhere you are running a Fluval FX5 canister. Make sure when you clean it you do not wash the bio-media with tap water. I just can not stress enough how much I hate canister filters. Sorry to all you canister lovers out there. I think they suck.
i agree i am not a fan of canisters however if you do choose to use them you may want to add some sort of sump to it. dosent have to be much a diy like this one is easily cleaned, cheap to build and you dont loose all of your bio load everytime you clean the canister portion of your system... the canisters in this photo are used for pumps from the sump to the tank and final polishing only. since this photo the sump portion has been upgraded to a 75 gal container, and also built a cover for it. This was built from things i had laying around my garage. the drawers make it easy to maintain. the "rain fall effect" aerates and promotes gas exchange at each level. i used kitchen scrubbers and "golf whiffle balls" in alternating layers instead of "bio balls" which are in the no.2 drawer.. top drawer contains a fine mesh screen coffee filter attached to the underside of the inlet hose to catch large debris and the drawer contains carbon & lava rock. drawer 3 is filter poly media. it has been running for 2 yrs now and hasn't needed cleaning as of yet, other than dump coffee screen filter from time to time to rid of small bones from feeders that find their way in to it and decompose. water levels are always right on the mark.

FYI - you don't need air stones in your tank to provide oxygen, you just need surface agitation.

It's the agitation that puts the oxygen in the water, not the air stone. The air stone makes bubbles that agitate the top of the water causing gas exchange.

I don't have an air stone in any of my tanks and everyone is just fine.

Also, some say salt is good, some say it's pointless. Personally, I think keeping your water clean will help your fish more than anything. Don't add salt just for the he'll of it.

Happy your rays are ok.
