stingray floating on top of water?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you earthstudent for the imput I really appreciate it. I am not afraid to tell the truth on here, I admit I am a novice and I know for the most part, everybody here on MFK is down to give a helping hand so I give as much info as possible. Just the last few night I have been posting via itouch and it is hard to type haha

I had my airstones on all day while I was in class and came home to very happy rays. Like I said, their spirales are back to a slower rate and not struggling to get in air like the other night. The other night they were opening all the way very rapidly.

I just got some suction cups and I'm gonna put my airstones in better, I just put them in quick this morning to get the oxygen going while I was at school.

Any advice on getting them to stay under the sand? They seem to keeping popping up and standing vertical. I'm gonna turn down the power on them and see if that works.

I usually weight mine down with stainless tig wire. But most people don't have that lying around like I do LOL. You can also suction cup them to the bottom but that might be to deep in the sand (depending on your sand depth) to give good small bubbles. I have seen large weighted stones but not to often.

I just dug up like 1.5" of sand on the retics side and buried the hell outta one stone, suction cup to the bottom glass should be okay. tank is cloudy as hell right now though with all the sand but it'll clear up in a few hours I'm sure.

Next up is the motoros side, hesitant with them they are a little more skidish but they should be okay with my hands in the tank they usually let me pet them.

Good post for a lot of new ray keepers to read and learn from. When rays swim on the surface like that there is allways a problem I have found. Ammonia, oxygen, and then a substrate issue in that order is what I find. As DW said rays are not a good first fish as many people that do know water chemistry well seem to under estimate the amount of waste a ray can produce and get themselves into trouble really fast and may not realize it until it is to late. Glad it's working out.

Just got my airstones buried nice and neat (I have OCD haha). Rays seem to love it now, just can't see much because the water is extremly cloudy from stirring up the sand.

Again, I just wanted to thank all my fellow MFK members for all the feedback. If it was not for all of you I would have three dead rays and a broken heart

yea i picked up some live worms from Wal-Mart actually when I initally got my Motoros to get them to eat. They go after them but as soon as they put up a fight they spit em out haha.

My retic is a monster she rocks back and forth and shreads them apart and takes em down no problem, my motoros are starting to.

Gave them a small amount of bloodworms before, ill give them each like one worms tonight cut up and call it a night.

They are very active again and i am very happy to say the least!

EDIT: the worms I have from Wal-Mart are bait worms titled, "Trout-worms" are these okay?

the Trout Worms are fine... That is exac what I feed my motoro's and they love them.

The water will clear up. Sifting the sand around made it cloudy, thats usual. give it a few hrs.. keep your filter running...
glad to help.. ask us anytime and keep us posted as how things are going...

Just some ideas, might try some real pieces of drift wood when you get the cash. it helps with the natural affect of the tank and water.. Just make sure the driftwood doesnt have any sharp edges. I even have some plants in my tank. They help to. best way to plant them is in small ceramic pots. put plant in pot and add some rock to hold the plant in the pot.. then place around the drift wood or just place it in .. plants help the water and tank also.. and the pots help from the rays digging them up or messing them up as fast.

I put them in a small container full of water from the tank to get the dirt off, cut them up and drop em in. My rays were hiding under the sand when I was all up in there putting in the airstones which was very sketchy but now they are very active loving the bubbles. Gonna feed them a small amount of worms tonight before bed.

Unlike most novice ray keepers I am not looking to have my rays grow at freak rates of like 8" a month. I'de rather them grow healthy and progressivly. Plus, the truth is I have only a 125 gallon and that is all I will ever have living at home on the second floor so eventually, I will have to part with one or two.

I'm so happy ur rays survived! I looked on thsi acuple days ago and was scared for ya. As far as burying your air stones goes just weigh it down abit and it should be all good

Glade to see everything worked out. Alot of rays dont survive after that. Its always good to see that someone was able to bring them back to their normal selfs again.
