stingray floating on top of water?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I def had a lot of luck these last few days!
if I had went to sleep the other night they would have died for sure.

Yes this thread showed what mfk is all about people working together for the common good.

Once you are confident that your tank is established don't be stingy with the food motoro pups will want to eat at least twice a day they have a very high metabolism

Good job on recognizing the strange behavior in time to correct the situation. When you get to know your rays they will let you know when they are unhappy

Im glad all is good.
Frozen Krill is ok if they will eat it. I do talapia, shrimp (when they will eat it), krill, worms, ghost shrimp as a snack, and working on a gel mix we here have been trying to profect..lol
If they will not eat anything but worms, make sure they get some fat base built up (they store fat in there tail), when the fat base is good.. try starving them for a few days. then drop in some of the other kinds of food. there are sticky's about all this. would help to read all the stickys to learn some info.. they help..

here is the sticky on breaking them into other foods:

thanks, I breifly read that thread in my research phase but I will read the whole thing later on. my retic had quite the fat tail but after the stress of the last few days has gone down a bit. plumping her up nice though

Ignore the alkalinity, yes it makes ammonia more toxic but ammonia is a short term issue as soon as fully cycled.

Throw away the dip strips ASAP as they are not accurate enough on Ammonia, Nitrite or Nitrate and go out of date well within there stated range.

The gulping of air is due to the fact that Nitrite inhibits the ability for the blood to carry oxygen, therefore a symptom and not a cause issue, yes you need to heavily airate whilst there is nitrite present but this is not what made the rays sick, it was how you noticed there was something wrong.

If you see them gasp or if the water goes cloudy then that is your sign to do a water change of 25% to 50% ASAP.

The info from Johnno, David and bcfd is all you need to get this sorted

That 125g is not going to house those rays for long (at least not very comfortably), especially the motoros.

My opinion is, (I think many will agree) 3 rays in that tank is just not good. I would just go with the retic in that tank.

Also, I think you said somewhere you are running a Fluval FX5 canister. Make sure when you clean it you do not wash the bio-media with tap water. I just can not stress enough how much I hate canister filters. Sorry to all you canister lovers out there. I think they suck.
