Stingray issues, what can it be?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Probably best to treat just the rays so a smaller tank/s would be the go, I make sure to always have a QT setup, for future reference incase anything happens again.

Or if you were going to treat your big tank maybe drop the water down so there is not as much in there? The discus may not like you for that though, might be best to remove them whilst you do this?

I will borrow a 350 liter tank from a buddy of mine and just take the ray that has issues while im trying to figure out what type of medicine that works. Not going wildshot on the big system. About leveling down the system, that is a great idea, if i come to the step where il have to medicine eveything, thats the route to go. Dryseason ;).

What meds should i start out with? The easyest?(prazi) does not affect filter either. What would you start out with david? I know you have great experience in rays and appriciate that you chimed in.

Thanks to everyone!!

I would probably start with the prazi and I would lower the water level and treat the whole system, or move everything into a Q tank and sterilize the big system with Potassium permanganate.

I would treat all the fish including the Discus. If they are carriers of the parasite, then you will continue to have problems. Prazi goes a long way.

+1 I would also quarantine and treat any new species added to the system after this clears up... Especially any newly imported and/or wild caught specimens. They almost always have some sort of parasite.

I have never really quarantined anything. And if i did quarantine the rays, i would still not notice this, as ive had them for over 3 years with no signs of anything. There has not bin added fish to this system since i started it, and there was no problem before either.. This must be somekinda hidden parasite that got activated becouse of something unknown happened to the system. I also belive that the parasite is a stingray only thing, as no other fish show any sign of anything. All the other fishes, especially the discus are way more fragile then the rays if there is something going on..

I will do the whole system, but first i wanna find out what works :) I really hope prazi does the trick as that is the most gentle medicine to the system..

But what do we really believe? External or internal? Prazi goes for external as ive read.. I would think this was some internal going on?

I have had rays autopsied before by U.Mississippi. vet pathology, dept of warm water diseases......experts you might say.
They have found parasites that are unknown to science more than once....so you may never get a clear answer about what it is exactly, but one would suppose 'internal'.
One other possibility is that if you got the rays as wild caught adults maybe they died of old age? I am not sure how one could estimate the age of a ray unless it was obviously a juvenile when acquired .
Also, rays, being scaleless, have different issues and sensitivities than Discus, which are , as noted, prone to problems (altho wilds less so than 'paint-bucket' domestics )

It seems to me that rays get very stressed when a tank mate is sick or dies which may be adding to the problem as far as stress goes. Maybe treat with prazi and or salt, keep the temp. up, feedings light and the room dark to reduce stress? Just a shot in the dark if you are going after the whole system.
