Sorry, due to the information on the dvd we wil not be releasing it until we get approval from all the parties involved & it is copywrited. Those who were gracious enough to share with all who attended are studying rays for their job or their education, it would not be a good thing for people to publish their hard work as their own for a few bucks. We are going to start a fund to help research of stingrays & when we release the DVD the proceeds will go to help study rays. The Symposium was a huge leap for those who went & I think all of us would not like to see the information abused.
Thank You

Todd M. Ellis

Wow ok.

I didn't really plan on 'abusing information' but if that's the way it is viewed, I guess so..

I am glad all those who could financially afford the trip and time off can withhold the information.. they deserve it - they paid for it. For those of us who couldn't spend thousands for a 'hobby trip', I guess we can be the 'mushrooms' - left in the dark and fed poop.

Incase you wonder why not many hobbyists didn't attend and the event from a non-zoological standpoint was a flop - It was because of $$$$$.. and now information won't be widespread because of $$$$$. Sweet.

I am just as eager to learn about stingrays as anyone, and share and provide the information in a 'non-hoarding' fashion. I didn't realize it was such top secret information and spreading this information would be taboo.

I understand copyrights and published documents, but I didn't think I would get this kind of reply.

I guess I will just buy a DVD when it's finally released.. Hopefully it will cost less than a few grand - because I would love to help the 'research fund'..

I mean obviously my signature of 3+ years shows that I am not for the best interest of Stingrays.

no offense, just my opinion.

I am pushing to have the next symposium in Brazil so we can all learn & help. Once you all see some of the published work & or the DVD you will understand..

Yeah I think you will have a better turn out for that one.. much more appealing.

I guess when(if) I see the published work and DVD, I will understand..

I don't think it's meant to hord all the info... but I do know the researchers prefer to have things published so that when "talk" becomes "fact", it's attributed to the correct parties.

Although I will say a lot of what was talked about might upset a lot of people who are more into the hobby than the science. Due to new information, we really need to stop all hybrids in captivity and become super aware of what species is getting bred and where to trace gene pools in the future. This is to protect both animals as a species and the trade if the ban become tighter instead of opening up in the near future. Breeding for specific "cool" patterns / traits should be avoided, and instead the focus should be more along the lines of keeping the gene pool spread out - more similar to the zoo/aquarium methods.

I'm sure a lot of the other info will come out mixed with what we already share around here. (Like which types of medical treatments work and why.... things like that.)

We have shared what we learned there, but there are photos and documentation that these people have worked years to gather and compile. We can and have shared new info, but the pictures and stats that were shown to us are the result of their hard work. The video with all the pics and hard facts can't be released until they publish it, sealing in stone with their name on it, Field work is far from easy, and years of research is hard work to have it ripped off in a moment and have someone else put their name on it.
I know you wouldn't do that, but someone else would. We are honoring their request to not share it until then. I'd hate to invest years of my life into something and have it taken from me. Its not money that is keeping the video at bay for now, it is officially submitting the work with their name on it.

the trip didn't cost thousands. 125.00 for the symposium, 330.00 for the plane and 480.00 for the hotel. thats 935.00. I would have loved to have split the hotel cost, but I couldn't find anyone to bunk with.

Understandable.

My comment about the publishing of a book wasn't intended for my to profiteer.. infact I could care less about $$ - I just want to learn.

However, the fact that their was such a wealth of information discussed makes me a bit discouraged to continue to post on a regular basis. I feel that so much information is just speculation and we proliferate these myths by repeating them here. Although this might be a great source of information of wealth for hobbyists, most scientists probably look at this forum from the outside and think we are all just blowing wind.

This is the main reason I abandoned the website I was working on - I knew it would become a moot point after the Synposium..

So now when people ask for a ray ID and those of us reply 'humerosa/orbignyi' I feel that some of those who went to the synposium will be lurking in the shadows going 'tee-hee those fools don't know what I know about Orbignyi!'.. a bit frustrating to say the least..

Thanks for clearing that up guys.. I am just ignorant.

Maybe I am just bitter I couldn't go.. that damn baby is still cooking.

Well, what i got from the symposium was just the opposite. What we call orbigyni, humerosa, peru flower, etc., even the scientist aren't sure what they are because of the vast variation in visible patterns within a species. I really feel that going to the symposium, makes me less sure an orbigyni is an orbigyni now.
