I have used ugly sticks for years on stand up yellow fin Tuna riggs with80W reels, and they have dragged some thick ass brutes out of the deep for me and not broken, but their action and sensitivity are terrible for smaller fish and their roller guides tend to bend or wear badly before the rod itself snapps.
I agree with "nativelover" you do get those deep drop rods that take wire and mono as standard line, and those rods dont play around!!! They would literally dragg a coral head out of the ground...LOL!!
The worst rod in my eyes are the shakespears!!! I have snapped a 30lb rod catching about a 40-50lb barracuda!!! He was a dirty fighter, but when it came to the nitty gritty at the end of the fight... it just didnt have the torque to hold the big boy at boat side.
Plus I find shakespear guides to be pretty flimsey on the lighter models.
