there's plenty of SW rods much stronger than ugly sticks, ones used for marlins and sharks and the lot of big water game fish, for FW stuff ugly's are good though.

they are just thicker, for the size you can't beat the ugly stick:)

think of a ugly the size of a marlin rod.

I have always used a uglystick for sna---I mean catching salmon, I have always used a med action and even under that extreme yank---catching action, they have never let me down. BUT have you ever tryed a rottpole?
take a look, of course these pictures are computer generated!!!

they have them. ... and they're not that great.

the size of the rod isnt the issue, its the strongest, wich usually means durable.

unless you mean what can lift the most? id say a deep drop rod about 4ft long rated to 300lb test.

I have used ugly sticks for years on stand up yellow fin Tuna riggs with80W reels, and they have dragged some thick ass brutes out of the deep for me and not broken, but their action and sensitivity are terrible for smaller fish and their roller guides tend to bend or wear badly before the rod itself snapps.

I agree with "nativelover" you do get those deep drop rods that take wire and mono as standard line, and those rods dont play around!!! They would literally dragg a coral head out of the ground...LOL!!

The worst rod in my eyes are the shakespears!!! I have snapped a 30lb rod catching about a 40-50lb barracuda!!! He was a dirty fighter, but when it came to the nitty gritty at the end of the fight... it just didnt have the torque to hold the big boy at boat side.
Plus I find shakespear guides to be pretty flimsey on the lighter models.

yes the 4 ft shorter rods usually for grouper species are definitely the strongest
Blue Fin tuna rods are alot more stouter than most marlin rods?
what kinda of marlin are we talking here Black, BLue , or white

white Marlin is what you get off the eastern seaboard and that is relatively light compared to tuna

this is a picture from my friends charter out of portsmouth NH and this is only 600 pounds, they have caught 2000 pounders up In prince edward island:drool:

ugly sticks have under gone all the tests i have closed them in doors many times and somehow they survive unblemished, although windows do take care of them pretty quick
I think that the patent on the ugly ran out for shakespeare if im correct so other companys have been trying to make run offs of it
