Suggest me a dog

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I saw that someone said Australian shepherd. I'd second that one. They are very smart and easy to train. Mine never pooped inside-not once-and had less than 10 accidents inside total before she was completely housebroken. After our last dog still crapping on the carpet at over 1 year of age (probably would have gone on longer, but we lost her to a car when she got out one day) I was AMAZED. A female Aussie would fit your size requirment, although males may be a little bigger. Mine is a female around 40 lbs. The one downside is that they are also MASSIVE shedders

She trained a Great Dane before. We're both dog lovers. I told her that if she wants a puppy, she gets to clean the crap off the carpet.

Well, good luck! Then being dog lovers I would go for the puppy also!! hope you will consider the shelters or rescues.

if you do go to a breeder, they need to be checked out also (physical visit, care of their facilities, care of their cages, etc.) If they are clean then chances are they keep their pets well kept. also check online for reviews, we didn't - otherwise we would have not gone thru with it. I guess we were lucky.

cuz we thought we were buying from reputable breeder - when we visited it was a bit messy - then she blamed it on raising a family & she was doing it alone.

that should have been a red flag for us. but when you see those pups running around licking you nipping at you look at you with those sad eyes...

ok we'll buy one. no! maybe we'll take a brother & sister! no! we'll take the brother & think about the sister when we come back. ok, we'll take just one...
we'll take the sister. so we bought the runt of the litter - it was cheaper & she was the cutest & she was the one that wouldn't let my wife walk away empty handed + what sealed it for us was she was a tough rascal - she could fend for herself vs. her bigger siblings & can scrape it up with all 6 of them! for food water or just playing!

i yi yi !! we were now owners of one of the cutest pups we had ever seen! (I'm sure everyone has seen the cutest in their time also!)

later on when we got her AKC papers & checked her lineage, we found out that she in-bred them. the dad mated with a sister but both were from different years & different litters. we were devastated! they say that weakens the lines but luckily we found her to be the best healthest least cost (medical care that is, no issues at all all these yrs!) best temperament great with kids easier to train dog we could ever ask for!

sorry to go off tangent - that was the breeder insight tip & our experience.

then maybe later on after the pup is trained & older, consider a rescue or humane society.

wish you the best!

p.s. I hate all the shedding our akita does - 4seasons long!! but yes I still love her!

I decided I should mention some of the drawbacks. Shar pei's are prone to some skin problems and with the folds around the eyes. They also tend to be a little skittish of new people.

I love shar pei's - that was our 3rd choice after akita & huskies.

but may I add, they have a weak lineage over the generations of breeding I hear & their life expectancy is much lower than many other breeds & are more prone to hip dysplasia so we decided not to, see link

otherwise great medium sized dogs!

First of all, what is your life style like? People mentioned several dogs here, but fail to mention the care they would need.

Australian Sheepdogs are super intelligent dogs. However, because of this and their high drive instinct, if you don't give them something to do, they will find something to do. If you want a dog that you can do agility training with, then that is a fantastic dog for you. If you want a companion who is more chill then you and the dog are going to flip out.

Jack Russells are adorable to look at, but are very dominant and opinionated by nature. They are difficult to train because of this, but are fun and quirky. You need to be a bit careful with these guys around children since they are prone to nippy biting that can do some pretty good damage. If you have strong experience training and can provide the dog with plenty of activity, they can be fun little rascals.

As for the Shibu Inu, all I can say is that they are very unpredictable and (as a veterinary technician of many years) is one of the dogs on my top 10 biters list. If one walks through the door is muzzled immediately, no chances given. I've seen the repeat performance too many times. They are very stoic dogs until they don't like something and then they bite down and start thrashing without any warning or behavioral hint. If you have child in the house (visiting or always) keep them away from this dog. Very loyal to their owner (usually singular), but know that they are not good with children or strangers.

I know you said don't want anything poodlie, but before you totally rule them out, note that they are generally very intelligent, grounded dogs who have sadly been subjected to insane hair cuts. Seriously, people... What the hell? Anyways, a mix including these guys if often very healthy and intelligent, and they don't shed. You will always end up with a somewhat curly coat, but you also usually end up with a great dog.

Ultimately, I recommend going to a shelter, finding a mutt who needs a good home. They are more likely to be healthy, and its a sad fact that you have millions to choose from.

Good luck finding your new family member!

Too wrinkly!

I would suggest a shelter/rescue dog from humane society as well - if you want a smart dog that won't shed a whole lot, go for some type of terrier - most of these stay small(under 30 lbs) and are extremely loyal. Whatever dog you choose, you will love it no matter what with time. Good luck!

Too many choices. I may just get a gray wolf and breed it with a maltese and see what I get.
