Super aggressive male

The male gets super aggressive with the female and I’ve had to remove him twice. They’ve bred before but he started to beat her up. she seems ready to breed with him but he eventually chases her until she’s swimming for her life. What can I do?

some acrylic or plexiglass into there and put a plate under it in the middle so when the female lays eggs you can rotate the plate for the male to fertilize them. Only thing I can think of other than completely separating them

This is not out of the ordinary for most cichlids.
In nature there is lots of space for a non-receptive female to escape (almost never in aquaria)
and there are usually a number of females available to distract the male.
I use egg crate (light diffusor) in most "pair only" tanks, with a space cut for the female alone to escape thru.
For most large cichlids it needs reinforcement, where rocks can be placed to give strength
One of the advantages (beside flow thru for filtration), many cichlids are able spawn thru it when ready
Below female on one side of the divider
male fertilizing eggs on the other side
I usually put the male on the side where current/flow, will help push milt to where the eggs are placed

Thanks guys, I was thinking about moving them to my 75 gallon tank and hoping that the extra space will ease up some of the aggression. The breeding tank is only 30 gallons so it’s pretty small. I’m going to add some dither fish as well.

These are pure bred Honduran red points, from a reputable source. Really gorgeous fish.
Finally! I was thinking the same but i have never seen them that blue and elongated before. Interesting.
