tank dilema - which tank to buy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i think you can find a better deal than that i found a new 180 for 800 bucks and its nice so just look around

first if you want new I would stay away from BA's they are over priced (I was to lazy to drive to another place an extra 20min drive on an already 30min drive)...

There is the Aquarium Depot in brampton and newer place farther east from Mississauga big al's I was just didnt feel like driving to those places but I wish I did BA's like to though extra fees at you...

also I know someone who is selling a Miracles 220 less then a year old for 1K you might be able to make a deal with him, I was suppost to buy it a while ago but he was waiting to sell the fronts he had in it. I just got an e-mail from him the other day saying it was finally empty...

a no brainer for me. get the cheaper one and get the heater for the same money as the black silicone one. 2 bits of kit for the price of the other one when money is tight sounds like common sense to me. and your only gonna be missing 2". 2" is nothing when your have over 2ft in height.

At Glasscages.com you can get a brand new 180 with black silicone and glass tops and oak stand for $1000. I know you've got store credit and whatnot so this might not matter but I really hope the pricetag in that picture is for a complete setup with stand and filter.

Actually, I just realized you're in Canada so nevermind. I say got for the bigger tank. Like you said, with that viewing window, are you really going to be looking at the silicone? Plus, algea washes off silicone pretty easily if you do it every month.

see, the thing is, all I am getting is tank, metal stand, glass top and one extra heater.

I have two XP3's and an AC110 to run and I have lights.

so I won't be spending $1200. not even close. I figure with store credit it won't be too bad.

the thing is, at this store I used to work there for a long time, so I can get a better deal than the listed price. I support them, worked hard for them for a long time, and they help me out. it works good :)

the more I think about it though, I really can't justify the extra price for the 180/220. its more than a monthly car payment, Which, when I am moved out, every dollar will help. I want a bigger tank bad and I don't want to wait the extra time to save up the extra cash :)

I am used to a 90, so a 150 is a pretty big jump up IMO.

I do love the little bit of extra height on the 150's. it makes it look extra big, above and beyond normal 24" tall tanks.

thanks for all the replies so far!

i'd buy a bigger used tank. got my 300 with filters and all for $500. but if you have to have new i'd get the cheaper one or save for the 220...you know you'll want it in 6 months anyways :)

I am pretty firm on buying new for a few reasons. the first is that I am picky on my equipment. Everyone has their preferences, for example, I like XP and AC filters, Ebo Jager Heaters, Coralife lights etc etc. Buying a used set up means getting someone elses idea of what is 'good' equipment :)

I also don't want someone elses scratches :)

the main reason though, is that I have had tanks set up for 12-15 years non-stop and never had a leak or a break.

I believe that part of why this is so is because I bought quality tanks brand new and looked after them

I want to be able to guarentee at least as far as I can that I will get the same quality life out of the 150.

So, buying used is not an option for me.

I realize that I will be sacrificing some size because of this, but I will be happier with my choice of accessories and peice of mind as far as leaks go..

some might think I am crazy but thats what I think :)

buying new isnt a bad idea,a bigger tank for cheaper just sounds right to me
