The deal with oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nicely put...although there are still some pretty rare oscars out there....but yeah i hear yaz. Now if only pike cichlids or pbass were the first fish peeps try....definately be hooked for life. Actually...thats why i like pikes so much...hehe....my first cichlid was a belly crawler male...:D my baby!

i miss my oscars, i had 2 albinos, 3 reds, and 4 tigers (all were about 15")

but work went bad and had to get rid of em all........ now all i have are some bichirs and other random fish (and my turtles)

but i do plan on making a 125 gal oscar tank when i get a bigger place :grinno:

Oooo... for me i will only keep one... as after some time it will eventualy recognise u as its truthful owner... so its worth keeping one though they are messy eaters..

I don't have the scanner hooked up to this computer (and I'm too lazy to go mess with the hubby's computer), but here are some pics of the pics, lol. The oscars were captive bred; I believe he bought them at Petsmart. He raised them up with tons of filtration and heavy vitamin supplementation, which might have helped the color development. The one with the extra ocelli is the male.

Anyone into oscars should pick up a copy of Stratton's book. The photography is just incredible (tons of photos of wild caughts with dorsal occelli), and there's a cool chapter on oscars in the wild. That book is what made us want wild caughts.

My six juveniles from Jeff Rapps are settling in (just got them yesterday). Absolutely awesome fish--healthy, active, and feeding. They are 2" and just starting to bring in their adult coloration. I wish I could get some pics, but the tank is dark blackwater so it just doesn't work. I'll try when I feed them tonight. There are pics of the whole tank and some of the red-headed severums on the page in my sig.

Here are some more pics of pics for ya! These are from the original release of The Guide to Owning Oscars by Richard F. Stratton (I believe TFH has since rereleased it with an updated cover). He also has pics of green wild type oscars, "purple" oscars, a "bronze" (gold) oscar, and some other fun stuff.

thanks for the pics laura, they look great! i'm in the hobby cuz of my Oscar (babygirl). she got me into the addiction that till this day i have LOL :grinyes: I believe im' more attach to her than any of my other fish(25-30 of 'em), the problem is, you can get an oscar anywhere you go, and because of their availability, people tend to shy away from them, cuz when you do share them with other people (to show off) almost everyone has had 'em or still has 'em :naughty: cant' really show off a new car if everyone's already driving it  We usually brag with the uniqueness of our fish, or scarcity, the harder for them to get, the more popular they get, oddballs and what not, and our O's just doesn't fit the criteria. here she is :clap

Mine fit the criteria :D . These babies are A. sp. "Venezuela." If anyone is still debating on ordering them, go for it. Jeff said they were going fast, and that was Monday. Darn things are nigh impossible to photograph though . . .
