The general public and thier funny fish keeping setups and ways.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right. We MFK'ers jump at the chance to discuss our tanks. The average "Goldfish Joe" will lie and change the subject to pave the way for putting a 3' species into his 2' tank, because he wants it and that's that. Sadness.

I was over a friends house a while back and his tank was only a bit more then half full. When i asked him why, he said he didn't have time to top off the water. Heck, if the water drops a few millimeters in my tank I refill. However there was a time that his tank was perfect, but he let it go. time, time is something you need for this hobby.

I put in maybe 35-40 mins a day, and my tanks are still far from perfect.

What exactly are you doing to the tanks for 35-40 mins a day? For me, my routine Monday-Friday is turn lights on, feed and turn lights off. All my maitainence is done on the weekends.

i must be a bad fish keeper then cuz i don't spend that much time a week working on my tanks.

granted, we're only talking 2 tanks and neither are planted but 35-40 minutes a day sounds like overkill

Ha! You said it...Don't have time for a topoff? Man, as you stated, I spend MINIMUM 30-40 mins a day in my fishroom/basement... I do water changes so often, I don't have to top off anything:)

Sad that part of what contributes to this problem are stores that carry fish that only 1% of fish keepers should even have. Pacu, Pangasius sharks, Ret tail cats, etc... Let alone the others that are a "maybe" if you have at least a 75g tank with just this one fish, solo.

Many stores preach responsible pet care with adoption programs for cats and dogs but when it comes to fish they are way off. Recommending a tank size of at least 20g for a pet that will require at least 75-100.

Yep the general public is clueless and the stores that sell them the supplies and provide the information help contribute to this.

Lets see. Morning turn on lights (that need to be turned on), top off any evaporation, feed 4 tanks - 15 minutes.

Night - Top off evaporation, empty de-humidifier, feed. watch fish. Perform water changes (every third day) - check filters, perform maintenance - 15-35 mins

Weekends is time for the wife and kids. I rarely get an opportunity there.

By the way, i'm not saying i'm perfect. far from it. My dad always told me, every man is your superior in that you may learn something from him. I have always believed that.

It's just that when I see "45 gallon set up - 450 dollars" - I say to myself, "really?"
