I wouldn't want one if the mechanical surface areas are small. That defeats the purpose.

It looks different for sure...but if it's better, well we have to wait and see
 
read the review in practicalfishkeeping.co.uk....the UK had the chance to see the unit and the review was released yesterday...

Since there are slots in the outer baskets, my guess is that the water flow down through the tops of the sponges and not the sides where most of the SA is located?

I wish I had the dimensions of the unit to calculate the SA. I thought this filter would have a higher flow rate. Probably has the same SA as my 304 which puts out a flow between the two models.

I looked a bit closer at the vid and it seems as though one side of the baskets are larger than the other. THe SA probably will not be a problem with the flow they have. For some reason I thought the center cylinders where for mechanical, that would be a joke, but I wouldn't put it past Hagen to do things ass backwards.
