Hard to argue with those points.

The current world population is over 7.1 billion people. It's projected to reach 10 billon somewhere around 2050. People eat fish. It's only a matter of time!

Just saying that we are selfishly exploiting the ocean and harvesting WELL beyond the tipping point of its ability to recover. I think that the most selfish act of exploitation has got to be the slaughtering of sharks for their fins. Often hauling the shark up on the boat, cutting its fin off and then dumping it back into the water to bleed to death. It appalls me that there is a demand for a soup that tastes like crap but yet is a delicacy for the rich traditional Chinese. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

Until the worlds nations can unite together and understand that there are consequences for ALL of us, I dont see much changing. It'll take a global catastrophe to unite us all into one common goal I think and by then it'll be too late. Too many different beliefs, economic situations and everyone living in their own little bubble instead of looking at the big picture.

This is so true!! Most people don't understand that sharks are an important part to our ecosystem. They keep many problem species in check and at a healthy level. Without them certain species will overtake reefs and cause major problems.
Also more people need to have the mindset that we are intruding on their territory and shark attacks are cases of misidentification and in fact they don't like human flesh at all. That is why they bite us instead of completely consuming us.

The attitudes from parts of the people in HK are finally changing towards the consumption of sharks fin and other things... But unfortunately there are still a lot of people over here and even more in China that think its important to have sharks fin at social gatherings as a status symbol which is sad...

We can only hope peoples views on eating sharks fin will change before there are no sharks left...

I'm dead against commercial fishing in general. Fish, other than commercially farmed, should be a delicacy and a luxury, not some cheap-ass stuff in a can sold cheaper than cat food! .

Commericail farmed fish is not any better, and in fact, is often worse for the enviroment then wild caught fish.

Yeah and all the dead fish that are killed and wasted as by-catch does the swollen population lots of good.

You mean the Sea Shepherds, a glorified terrorist group?
There's a loophole in International Law allowing harvesting whales for specific purposes, if they wanted NO fishing and NO harvesting at all, they should have closed that loophole. Some of the things those morons do to harass fishermen taking whales within the letter of the law are absolutely criminal. And the Discovery Channel goes and glorifies it...

As long as the letter of the law (intent of the law is a totally different argument) is being followed, the Japanese whalers should be completely left alone.

Want to stop it? Get the law rewritten.

Laws are in place because too many people too high up make money off of it. You think theyll rewrite their pocket books? No. Hell i want em to get more intense, and now they are officially a law enforcement group sanctioned by a south american country. So they are becoming legitimate.

Laws like the ones you talk about exist only for one reason, lining the pockets of "powerful" people. And so they can mislabel the meat and call it "dolphin". Most meat marketed as dolphin in that area is whale from those hunts. Scientific purposes my arse.

Because the law is always right, no government is ever wrong or corrupt, and justice always prevails right?

No, because without written laws and fair and even enforcement of those written laws, society degenerates into chaos and anarchy, where only the most savage and ruthless survive. You may not like civilized society, or following rules, I often don't either. But it is far better than the alternative. The choice is rule by laws which are instituted by men among men, or mob rule. Civilization or chaos. All of society falls somewhere along a continuum between those two extremes. Reasonable men can disagree on the "golden mean", but the concept is axiomatic.
