I thought about being a teacher. I started school last year going for a BS in Biology with a certification to teach high school, but this year I dropped the teaching certification part. I'm still not 100% sure it was the right decision. My main problem with teaching is, I'd rather teach younger kids, but the subject I want to teach is higher level sciences, mainly biology like 7-12. For now my plan is getting a BS in Bio concentrating on field research and eventually getting my doctorate and teaching at the university level

im contemplating teaching as well. i graduate in may or next december, pending i get one class, with a BS in Biology. my school has a 14month masters program (http://www.kennesaw.edu/education/grad/MAT%20ChemorPhy.htm) for biology teaching. this summer is the first they will be offering it. the best part is the state will pay for alot of it you just have to work x amount of years in the state of GA for the x amount of money they put in.

Sounds like a cool deal, a masters in the field of teaching is a must, the more education you have the more money you make!

I'm probably going to become a high school art teacher. I could still do my own artwork on the side, get paid vacations, and I can essentially create my own curriculum as an art teacher. I couldn't teach elementary school art, my color deficiancy would confuse the kids too badly.

Curriculum is set by the state, with standards to match, thou you can put your own twist on your lessons.

Not sure I understand but how can you teach if you arent certified?

If you are unsure, try volunteering at both a high school and elementary school. You will learn fast what you are more geared towards.

I am also going to school to become and elementary school teacher, I hope to be doing my student teaching next spring in Belze!

I'm not really becoming a teacher, hence dropping the teacher certification part. I plan on working up to my doctorate and possibly working at a university. Part of my job there might include teaching some courses. I have volunteered at both, and I really like working with younger kids, but I'd rather teach more advanced biological sciences.

My dream job would actually be in an educational capacity, but not at an actual school. I'd really like to work in the education department at a facility like a zoo, park, or museum-do things like create educational programs for kids like camps, shows, displays, etc, so I'm still looking into the possibilities of that. (I have also volunteered in this area as well)

Sounds like an admiral goal, much luck to you!!! :)

The state curriculum for art classes are usually pretty loose. I guess it all depends on where you're located.

Nice classroom and tanks. If I did become a teacher, I'd have to have tons of tanks in the room like that too.

Wow, do you get your students to do water changes?

I'm new around here but I'm a Master's Student teaching Biology at a University. I've got my bachelors in Bio, I'll have a masters by May 2010 and a Thesis studying Slimy Sculpin in Arctic Alaska, An ichthyology PhD will most likely follow that. Then I'm sure I'll teach at a University full time after that, at least until I can find someone to pay me to play with fish all day and not do anything else!! lol.
