I teach high school art in a district just South of Houston. It's kind of funny, I was a bio major in school but with 6 classes left, I took the required art class (I picked ceramics) totally loved it, and switched to finish up with art. I still think it's funny when the kids seem shocked that I can help them with their math or science work. I think I'm the only art teacher with epidemiology and microbiology as electives :grinno:

I think its important to incorporate all the subjects together, and you don't see that much as kids get older. I run an after school program for some of the at-risk kids, and we touch on all subjects through art projects and real world examples and experiences.

When I was in highschool I got credit for maintaining their 600 gal chilled saltwater natives aquarium (this was in alaska). Used natural water for water changes (lot of bucket hauling) and rusted out the bed of my pickup!!! Loved every minute. My kids know that they will have severe consequences for messing with my little cons. Actually I got the convicts because most of the students I teach are cons themselves!

A buddy of mine teaches at the alternative ed high school in Flint, Mi. Some of the stories he has told me are outrageous. My hat goes off to you oscarcrazy. You are not in an easy field as far as education goes.

very cool.... please start a thread on the salmon project so we can all follow allong.

I picked up the salmon eggs yesterday. They are in the tank and are eyed already. I will get some pics and try to start a thread tomorrow. It might not happen till Friday though...parent/teacher conferences tomorrow night. I got a lot of freebies too, some very cool posters, activities, etc....

I'm in spring branch or "da branch" as the kids call it, where you at (as the kids would say)?

Thanks!! Somebody's got to do it, might as well be me, I'm a glutton for punishment. Hope that salmon project works out, sounds awesome! Have a hatchery in my hometown that did similar things with the area schools, tons of fun!!!

Pasa-get-down-dena :nilly:

O, and if you want a tank but are afraid of kids messing with it, just get something that bites. Tell them if they are caught messing with it, they have to stick their hand in there for a minute and see how that works out ;)

I teach in a portable building (triler trash!! lol) and space is limited, otherwise I'd love to have a tank at school. As it is now, I have 2 chinchillas in there (adopted them from someone) and when the kids wanted to pet them and aksed me if they bit, I told them 'well, you are aware that have teeth...go for it and find out'. Turns out they give a couple of light warning bites, then chomp down pretty hard

Nice idea, I'll have to try that one, though my cons are just cute little buggers at the moment. And my kids are more concerned with the bite of handcuffs or extension of placement for destruction of property (things are strict here);).
This needs to be a sticky or a league or something. Monster teachers league.... kinda like the sound of that. I can already picture the t-shirts. :naughty:

I like how you're thinking OL.

It's kind of messed up, but there's no leverage like threatening to call a parole officer ;) I love it. That usually shuts them up and gets them back in line reeeeeal fast
