The old youth leader at the church I grew up in teaches at an alternative school as well. I have a big respect for teachers, but after some of his stories, I have an even greater respect for alt. school teachers. He's a big guy-probably 300 lbs of basically solid muscle-so he's the guy they call when anything goes down in any classroom. He's had pretty good sized pieces of furniture thrown at him by students and probably barely flinched...

 not sure if you are serious or not.... your method seems to lack a basic understanding of learning styles and effective teaching methods

No, I wasn't being serious. but seriously, I would enjoy school much more if the teachers would cut to the chase, do the work, play some chilling music, and let the students mellow amongst each other. that is the way to teach.... :D

Depending on the situation, that kind of thing might work, or fail entirely. With more motivated students in more advanced classes, that type of thing worked great. In other classes where kids are only there because their parents haven't allowed them to drop out yet and they haven't been emancipated to make the decision themselves-it would just give them more of a chance to make the teacher's job a living hell.

In my AP calculus class in high school, we did that a lot. Teacher did a quick lesson, gave us an assignment to practice the new stuff he taught and set us loose to work on it as a class (there were only 7 of us, so it worked well). He'd put on some music-normally movie themes and classical stuff-I remember Star Wars, Indian Jones, and Peter and the Wolf and e and the 7 of us would randomly talk about stuff a we worked through the problems...Very good working environment, but not appropriate for all crowds...

yes, I think it would be awesome to be a teacher like that aswell, like, I swear to god my ITD teacher (industrial tech and design... full of students who don't want to do well at school) likes to yell and be stern to us. lol. not that I'm bad, the rest of the deadbeat class is.. :(

Seriously depends on the student and on the subject being taught. I know at my school there would be only a few instances that the above teaching method would be appropriate or effective. Also school is a prep for either college or work, so sitting back and chillin with the homies is usually a poor way to get these kids ready for the real world.

I'll start a collection for a coffee pot and a microwave from the early 80's.
:ROFL:That is so true...I have been to five different schools (including student teaching) and they all had old coffee pots and microwaves.
