Today was fairly uneventful at school (well, compared to yesterday when we had a kid hauled away in handcuffs). Did drop some hints that the class would have some visitors on Monday, got them thinking it could be anything from their PO to Tracey McGradey (actually its the convicts cichlids I bought for the class). Should be fun. I'm sure most of these kids have never even really had a pet before (most are low income apt. dwellers). Anyway, any neat stories from today?

Today one of my first grade students told me his mother was recently "shot and killed."

Upon further investigation, the little bugger was straight up lying!!!! Sadly enough he is being raised by his grandfather, dad is MIA and mom is off somewhere having even more babies. Poor guy....

What 1st grader says such things?

Today we had our second bomb scare this year (evacuated the building and returned after the police and fire department cleared the school). They are getting pretty good at it since we had a half a dozen of them last year.

They finally expelled the student who hung two dogs in the school yard last week. Kind of traumatic for the elementary school kids, though (I wasn't too thrilled myself, good thing I didn't catch him).

On the upside, one of my students brought me pizza that he made in home ec class. I wonder if I should have eaten it? Just kidding, it tasted fine. And the students are really motivated to try out the new electric guitars and drums we bought for an after school music program.

Teaching can be fun if you focus on the positives and not let the negatives get to you. I treat each day as a new day and we choose whether we are going to have a good one or not.

Man, poor kid. Kudos to the gramps though!! Had a kid tell us recently that he was having a hard time and making the poor choices that got him sent to my school in the first place cause his mom was dying of breast cancer. Turns out the story was totally bs!!! Mom had a good laugh, then pretty decent yell at the young man. :headbang2

I added a red foot tortoise to the growing colection at the school. The clasroom hosting it is very excited. They are doing research projects and voting on a name. They even took it out for its own recess so it could soak up some Florida sun. I think they will also start a feeding scedule so kids can take turns bringing in food.

The old youth leader at the church I grew up in teaches at an alternative school as well. I have a big respect for teachers, but after some of his stories, I have an even greater respect for alt. school teachers. He's a big guy-probably 300 lbs of basically solid muscle-so he's the guy they call when anything goes down in any classroom. He's had pretty good sized pieces of furniture thrown at him by students and probably barely flinched...

I think it's funny.... my students know I'm originally from New York, and for some reason, that automatically means I can kick anyone's ass :naughty: :nilly:

I go ahead and let them think that... it's better off that way.
It has almost come up a time or two though :irked:

you should go for it, it really is fun. Granted, it has its moments...but as long as there's a happy hour somewhere, you'll find a way to go on :)

I looked at the link to your wire sculptures... Incredible!! I'm very impressed!!

I haven't done much with wire sculpture, but I really want to try it out. Any suggestions?

Thanks! They're my true passion in art. The most important part about working with wire is to fight through the pain and bleeding fingers. You also want to wrap the wire at the desired connecting point as tightly as possible so it doesn't move. Other than that it's all experimentation.

Karma, Snappy is awesome!!! How could anyone not love a face like that?

I'm all too familiar with kids who have a really tough home life, it's pretty depressing. A lot of my friends grew up that way.

I'm thinking that I'll being playing a lot of progressive jazz in my art classes, maybe even change it up a bit to help the students get into certain moods or different projects.

Would you mind if I used your pictures as examples for my class?

And you do it mostly by hand? What kind of wire do you use? And suggestions on what to avoid?
