Thinking about a poly...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think its awesome that your getting into polys man. I think you would enjoy them.

Overall polys arent an aggressive fish. Out of all the polys that ive had tje only one that was truly aggtessive was an endlicheri "dabola". A coulple of other members reported the same behavior. Could be that we just got unlucky.

As far as which one its really in your taste and what your willing to do to obtain one. Ordering a wc one through the mail woukd allow you more of a selection to pick from vs getting one from your LFS.

Is this what you were reffering too ? View attachment 1278079

That is the exact one I was looking at. Thanks for posting the picture.

Here is my tank as of today:

It is a bit messy because this is about two minutes after I finished my water change. Also, I just removed my 2" pvc tubes because my biggest eel was starting to get stuck in them and it actually got a bit of an injury right around the anal fin area. That big eel really is a monster of a fire eel for how long it is.

As for getting a small one and growing it out in my 29, I kind of prefer it that way because I enjoy growing my fish from a really young age. I started my first two fire eels at 3-4". The only reason I got the third fire eel is because I couldn't pass up the red coloration it had.

I will probably like the lower Jaws better if they look more prehistoric. That look is what is drawing me into them.

As J jaws7777 mentioned the ‘Dabola’ endli is fairly agressive. I still have mine and it does bite on a few of the other polys but I dont have any other types of bottom fish so cant say what it would do. But it is also a wild caught fish so it is a bit expected. Your fish store is likely selling captive born polys so you might not see the same agression. The endli and ornate are also both known bullies.

Truthfully I would go with the wild caught from toyin 3 of mine are from him along with 8 of my plecos(my LFS orders from him) his fish are AWESOME.

also it's good to see you are now going to be keeping 3 of my 4 main fish I keep. Now you just need some knives

Fish Tank Travis Fish Tank Travis it really depends on what your taste is. Look through some of the stickies. Especially the all fins up one. Has allot of pics with polys on dofferent substrates. If you dont mind how they look on non red then go for it.

Only real issue i ever had with poly and non poly aggression was between the poly boss and my juruense. She was aggressive to the point of being labelled a real problem but she was the dominant one of the group every now and the she would nip at the others just to keep everyone in check. Polys have extremely hard scales so this for the most a
Part isnt a problem. But with the scaleless cats it cause a decent amount of damage (injured juruense thread in tje cat section) being the only poly and also being the new guy you most likely wouldnt deal with this. Cb endli are very cool too and like dmd said may be a little on the safer side.

Well, after looking through some of the stickies and watching the video about them, I think that I would like to get a polypterus endlicheri. I know I just saw some of these at my LFS last Thursday. Does this sound like a good choice?

Fish Tank Travis Fish Tank Travis - I wouldn't be too concerned about the thread i made with fishes in their mouth. As Troy1015 Troy1015 stated was all in good fun. Catfish and cichlids do more damage to tankmates than polys.

That stickie with the upper jaw and lower josh 's fish created is very useful. In terms of poly choices. It always boils down to where do i get one and size offered (availability), and overal cost (applicable to shipping).

I'd highly recommend asking members here on where to get and what the general prices are. It'll be a great way to make a confident and educated purchase. Cuz once u get one poly, more are surely gonna come..... ;-)

Not sure you desire but imo if your getting only one i would go with PBB king im my opinion but pricey but worth it.

Cost efficient king endlis. Grow big and look great and wild and cb are affordable.

Best of both worlds congicus get massive a bit more than endli but worth it.

Another thing once you start you will want all of them.
I prefer lower jaws. Not into upper jaws just dont get big enough. Although a nice weeksi can be hard to beat. Ornates are great to.

Lots of good pics in this thread as well. May give you an idea on what they would look like on your substrate. If it were me and i was going to spend the money on wc fish i would lean towards a red substrate. The garnet sand is nice because it doesnt really pop like nail olish read looks a bit natural

What was the best size and type of red garnet you suggest? I am also on black sand same as Fish Tank Travis and Endli's and other bichirs do look pretty good on it but I think the red would still be the best. Do you think I can get the same type of red garnet you use here in Australia? Also would you suggest a black background with the red garnet?
