Thinking About Getting a Jardini (What to Do?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not sure waiting until the Jar gets big would be the best way to start.. If the Jar get's used to being the only one in the tank he might kill all you're trying to introduce.. I would start with a community and if you have to take fish out you can do that..

how's this?

start with a school of cardinal tetras
move to congo or red eye tetras (larger)
add larger schooling community-suited fish after it starts eating tetras (rainbow fish?)
add some aequideans or other smaller less aggressive cichlids
introduce to "monsters" after its over its critical size

Fish Den's 2"ers are $60, Fish Palace has 2"ers for $55 and Golden Fish has 4"ers for $50. I'm probably going to get one from Golden Fish since it's a much better deal than the other two places.

it wouldnt be a bad idea to put it in w/ those guys as long as your jardini is the same size or close. my jardini is about the same size as my auratus and other cichlids and it attacks them alot. oscars are really submissive fish.

:)Good plan for a healthy Jardini

cool. what about some yoyo loaches or kuhli loaches to fill the bottom and for eating dropped food?

I ended up getting one from Golden Fish Aquariums. They called them yellow crossback jardinis? Said it was some sort of Asian/Jar hybrid? It is about 3" and was in a tank with about 20-30 other slightly smaller fish. I got 3 buenos aires tetras so far, but two got stuck up in the filter already, lol. I figured I would just start w/ larger tetras since theyre only .5" right now. I guess a 2.5 gal aquarium w/ a 10gal filter is a little too much current. I am setting up my 55 now in which I am going to put the cichilds for now and the jar and tetras in the 20g. I'm using one of my 125gal filters and water from it (added an XP3 to the 125g) for the 55 and the 20 is already established.

Although there are some color variations in jardini, I would highly dought the existance of a asian/jardini hybrid. I think they were pulling your leg.

I went to my LFS today to kill some time. I wound up getting a senegal bichir. They also had some 2-3 jars for $25.

yeah, IDK. i called and asked if they had any jars and they said yes. when I got there, they were labeled as "yellow crossback". i didn't really care WTH they called them as long as they were Australian, lol. the guy told me they were different than regular jars and they were some sort of hybrid or something. he told me there was info on the web about them, but all i could find was a decent thread on a arofanatics about hybridization: http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31829

i swear he said they were a jar/asian cross, but maybe he said they were selectively breed to look more like an asian, idk. whatever

time will tell. I'll count the scale rows when I get a chance.
