I think I would get a jar and raise it with nonthreatening tankmates such as tetras, etc. Plan on the jar being the only fish in the tank, sometimes they are sucsessfully kept with others but most times not. You could probably get 7-9 months outa that 55g, starting with a 2" fish.
sounds like a good idea. what fish would you suggest? won't a tetra, being that they only get 2" long, be food in a very short time? is there some sort of dither i could put in there that i could keep in the larger tank later, like red hook SD's or would it be okay to put 3 2" gouramis and 2 2" giant danios?

jars dont kill to eat, they kill to... well, KILL.
My jar loves crickets (live) nightcrawlers (live) ghost shrimp (live) so I really dont understand your comment.

I have a 1/2 dozen silver dollars, 4 bichirs, 3 shark cats, and a pair of large Green Severums with mine and they have been fine for over a yr.

its not always about how fast the other fish can go
fish have many other tricks up their sleeve
if not today he will catch them tomorrow

try growing the jar with other fish, that may work but trying to add later when the fish is already grown is a bad idea as there will be a bloody war or a hunger strike

Personally....my jar is at the 12" mark and lives with a number of tankmates. He's a little beligerent but doesn't harm any of the other fish. I attribute this to the fact that I threw him in with the other fish as soon as he was big enough not to fit in thier mouths, he's grown up with tank mates. HOWEVER....

If you aren't ready for the POSSIBILITY of having him be your ONLY fish then I wouldn't get him because your experiences may vary :). Hell, my experience may vary one of these days!

I should add that my Jar refuses to eat live fish. Which is a blessing if you ask me.
mine used to eat live when i got him from the lfs
but once i got him to accept dry shrimp he started refusing live too

My aro's all eat pellets and only get feeders when i have to feed the pbass.... As for dithers i would go for tinfoils... They get big and when you upgrade tanks they can move with your fish to the bigger tank... One of my tinfoils is pushing 10 inches right now..

maybe i could start introducing some other more aggressive fish into the 55g after it gets past the critical size, like the oscars or green terrors?? the bichir and BGK would probably be okay for a little while in the 55, too.

Thanks again for all the input, everyone. It really helps out a lot.

Tetras would be primarily if you started with a 2" jar, yes eventually they may be eaten. Giant danios will work but I have found while eating they pretty much will loose there attention towards self defense. Some silver dollar/red hooks can be quite skittish which can stress other fish. If your are going with cichlids I would kkep them about a 1/3 of the size of the jardini. Personallly my main concern would be for the jardini, once it out grows the 55g then you could experiment with tankmate combos.
