Thinking of getting a Cane Toad...

Ewwwww lol. I hate cane toads. I catch them whenever I find one around my house and throw them in the wheelie bin tied up in a plastic bag. I can't bring myself to touch them so I have to persuade them to jump into the bag by themselves. And running them over with the car does make a fantastic popping sound...is it bad that I reverse if I miss them the first time??

I'm with LawOne. Like Hawaii, they intro'd them here to control the sugar cane beetle. They had no impact on the beetle, but have gone on to decimate native species south into New South Wales, across the Northern Territory and into Westerm Australia. Local councils have campaigns encouraging kids to kill as many as they can. There's a doco called "Canetoads" which includes chats with an old, crazy-eyed hippie bloke who's been on the toad juice for years and says, "...never done me any harm..." Poor silly fool.

I perfectly understend how bad they are as pests and the very bad impact they have on native species but lets remenbar that they arent"things" they are animals(=they fell pain) and potencialy tameable ones by that matter. And I dont like that campain to encorage kids to kill as many as they can because it can create hard to break mentalitys about animals and can put childs in harms way, lets not forget this guys have very powerfull toxins that can be released like a spray directly from the venom glands if extremely provoced

The gov. campains call for the kids/adults to catch the Toads.
They hand out gloves, bags etc.....

They are then dropped at a collection point where they are taken away and placed into freezers.
The Toads slowly cool down & die. They don't even know what's happening to them.

I luv animals & agree that even these ugglies should be disposed of properley.
That's why we kill them as quickly as possible......lol......

Ah see that's what I was afraid of. I was thinking they just secreted the poison from their skin, meaning a glove job. But spray? I have various uncovered tanks in my room with some of my most precious animals. Maybe these things aren't for me?

I'm not aware of them "spraying" venom. I think that can only be accomplished with the help of a human squeezing the venom gland.

Yes they can spray or skirt venom, to a distance of about 60cm, BUT it only happens in situacions of EXTREME provocasion and pain, wich is very unlikely to happen in normal pet keeping And yes the normal way the venom is released is by pressing or squezing the venom gland. Normal handling wont stimulate any of thouse In my opinion I think this guys are basicly land based oscars with tons of personality, you simply have to use comon sence and your safe. Venom can also be released when they die, so be carefull when disposing of a carcase

I wouldnt kill them here as dont think they take a toll on anything but domestic dogs and cats . In other words not native herps,etc.

I cant fathom them taking a toll on native wild life as they dont climb and move slow as can be .
if I lived in Australia that is a different story as you have lots native small mammals only found there that they will eat.

I am convinced gators eat them when they jump into the canals.

I know in theory they cant/dont and I have never seen it but I know that when the canals by by brother in laws house was cleared of gators by trapper the population exploded .
