I just thought of one that tops that....

I had this highly problematic customer for a while that I think (hopfully) gave up on fish keeping. Have not seen her in over 5 years.

She insisted on doing a 5.5 gallon salt water aquarium with a small power filter and wanted to keep a pair of ocellaris clowns in it (falce percula) with a host anemone. She had nothing but problems and of course it was everyone's fault but hers.

THe unbelievable thing this moron did was....and Iam not even remotly exagerating.... Her fish sounded like they had a parasite going on, could not treat the aquarium because it had an anemone in it, she wouldn't do a hospital tank so I suggested for her to fresh water dip the fish for about 10 minutes. I explained all the in's & out's of how to do the freshwater dip and even wrote down instructions for her. She called a while later and asked me " how will I know when 10 minutes are up?" I sugested that she use a timer, she said she didn't have one. I asked if she had a micro wave, she said "yes", I said "use it, it has a timer"
THe freekin dumb ass put her clowns in the micro wave for 10 minutes.

Guess who she blamed for her fish dying....ME!!!!!! I told her at that point the absolute best thing she could do was drain the aquarium and get out of the hobby. Havn't seen her since.....

I dont work in a lfs but I ve been to nearly everyone with in a 200+ miles radius and the majority of them I prob. knew more then the stupid idiot that was working there. This guy was trying to sell off this 10inch lima shovel nose and told the guy it was at full size and would do fine in his 30 gallon...... ???? please do explain I have a Lima Shovel nose that 8inchs and hes already in a 125gallon. I am sure a a full sized 12-18inched around about Lima Shovelnose could live in great harmony in a 30gallon I talked the guy out of buying it and told him he should get a bigger tank first...after that the fish guy gave me a lecture in ruining his fish slaes... my bad....sure next time I'll support your selling of big fish for smaller tanks (sarcasim-sp)

 dude that i s absolutely hilarious, that does top mine by a mile

Couple more things come to mind...

I bought a Distochodus Sexfaciatus for $2.99 at a chain store, the clerk told me it was a large tiger barb.

I bought a Distochodus Lusoso for $4.99 at a chain store, the clerk told me it was in the clown loach family.

I bought 12 bosmani rainbows for $ .99 ea, listed as austrailian rainbows.

I bought a Blue Line trigger (pseudobalstodis Fuscus) for $14.99 on sale listed as a undulate trigged.

I saw a tank full of little kennyi (P. lombardio) and 7 stripe frontosa. The only price on the tank was Kennyi for $2.99ea. I asked the clerk about this, he said they were all the same fish....I bought like 18 7 strip frontosa for $2.99ea.

THis all happened years ago before I had my own shop. perhaps I should start visiting the local chains again to see what kind of deals I can get...

I do that alot, most big chains always misprice their fish. The Petco around here sells Ram's for 29 cents each... no joke.. they keep them in with neon tetras I dont know why but they do and thats how much they charge for the tetras, they dont have a tag up for the rams...so they dont bother looking for a price. I know what days the fish guy works, at night no one works so I go in and this lady is in charge of it and knows nothing about fish so I ask her for the Rams (noramlly about 5-7 all together) and I buy all of them and get charged 29 cents.. its great! Aslo they mis-priced all of their clown knifes so I bought one for $3.00 compared to $19 at most other places around here.

Chain stores are great for gettin wicked deals yes they are! And some LFS as well! :D The ones around here are just beyond my comprehension of how they can be so UTTERLY naive and stupid. I just try to talk to the employees as little as possible cuz they annoy the heck outa me. I too have been to every pet store in a 200mile radius...lol...and so far have only found one with knowledgable staff...and I got offered a job there! WOOT!

Nice I wish the lfs around here would hire already!! They all know me really well, they just dont need help right now... =( I have 3 lfs in the area that are knowledgable, which is pretty good they have awesome fish also!

Goliath Tigerfish... name reminds me of goliath the lion on that tv show jojos circus or something.

Now my shop is fish & aquariums only, no small animals, birds or reptiles. But none the less I get calls for help with other animals all the time.

I had a guy call and ask "how do you tell if your snake is dead?" I could not believe this...what do you say.

I asked some basic questions but then I started asking the obvious,

does it move? "no, it hasn't in about a week"

Are it's side moving, is it breathing? "no"

If you pick it up what happens? "nothing, it's stiff"

I was probibably a bigger smart ass with this guy than I should have been but geeze...how stupid can a person be?

When I was younger I had a five gallon and asked a guy how big of a tank I would need for a red belly pacu and he told me 10 gallon. After that I was so determined to get a 10 gallon and when I went home and looked them up I was very dissapointed! I got a 29 gallon for that christmas and spent prolly 150 dollars on stocking that tank until i found out about cycling. That was a sad year I had probably 10 sets of fish die on me because of cycling.
